Ash

With Gymir-6 on the defensive, Ash pitches back up, lights the afterburners and puts the Superflanker in his gun cross. The Tukreb lunges forward, and Ash keeps on the bandit with laser-focus. The target continues to grow in size until it dwarfs the reticle, and Ash squeezes the trigger to fire the pulse laser.

Lorens

"Shortsword, Snowman, copy. I'm taking point in the attack." Lorens weaves back and forth to defend against any possible attacks from the remaining Vespid.

Ash

"Dammit!" Ash realizes he is outmatched in terms of maneuverability and thrust output. In a bid to finish his opponent as quickly as possible, he puts Gymir-6 in his boresight and launches a pair of heatseekers. He then pitches down briefly to gather speed and releases another two off-bore all-aspect missiles on the same target.

Lorens

"Splash one drone! I have the fourth Vespid on my nose," Lorens calls out. He drags the aiming reticle over the target and depresses the trigger to fire the port Gauss cannon. "Guns!" The muzzle spews a massive fireball as the sabot round is sent downrange.

Ash

The splash timer hits zero, and Ash is rewarded with a confirmed missile hit, followed by the whine of the missile approach tone.

"Got him! Blackeye, breaking to defend!" Ash throws the Tukreb into a high-G right turn and dispenses two sets of flares before pulling up into a loop. He looks at his assailant, cues Gymir-6 with his HMD and launches two high off-boresight all-aspect missiles. "Ripple Fox-2 medium!"

Lorens

"Three!" Lorens pulls the trigger to fire the starboard coilgun at Nox-1 before weaving back into Bell's wake to mask the Shiva with her flares. He drops one of his own flare packets as he breaks off again to defend.

Ash

Ash's RWR squeals as the Tukreb is pinged by the trio of Su-57s. "Three nails, twelve o'clock. Flatlines. Still committed on the Superflanker," He turns on his HMD and prepares his heaters, all while gritting his teeth and keeping the reference circle over the bandit.

Lorens

"I see the drones on my scanner, I'm going after the first Nox." Lorens breaks radar lock and reacquires Nox-1 for a gun solution, waiting for the distancing arc to meet the in-range cue.

Ash

"Crash, Blackeye, roger. Master arm on," Ash flicks the all-important switch on the front console before working the multi-function display, "Radar on. I'm engaging the first Terminator on the left."

The reference circle shows up on the Tukreb's HUD, with a square target designator marking the position of the bandit. Ash takes a deep breath. This marks the first time he'll open fire on his own countrymen with every intent to kill. "No turning back." He gulps and mashes the munitions release button.

"Long Fox-1 ripple!"

The weapons bay doors swing open to make way for two semi-active radar missiles. The rocket motors light with a whoosh, followed by the cackle of two sonic booms.
Lorens

"Yes ma'am. Three, changing formation."

Lorens flies closer to Bell's Su-57, placing the Shiva where he might best leverage his superior's countermeasures to defeat missiles. He suspects the drones may have prioritized his aircraft, being the target with the biggest radar cross-section.

In the meantime, Lorens slaves the Shiva's BVR scanner to Vespid-2, cools his heatseekers, de-clutters his HUD to give the lead-computing optical sight more room for movement, and takes aim. The missile feedback tone rises from silence and turns into a pulsating growl as the Stirling cryocoolers drain the seeker elements of all heat.

Metro 2033 and Last Light. Great games. Gives you that "holy stuff I actually made it" feeling pretty often.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution. More RPG than FPS, but the gunplay here is still pretty solid.

"Thanks, I really needed to hear that."

Ash smiles and pats Markus on the shoulder. "Anytime."

Ash's smile drops for a bit.

"You're... You're not alone," he puts a hand on Markus' shoulder in assurance, "You have us. Forget the Imperials. We're still a team, and we answer only to our own. Am I wrong?"

"No, that's pretty much it. I was still living with my folks at the time. Really, they made the decision to move. My mom used to serve as a marine in the Coalition, so moving to Aesthia was a bit of a no-brainer," Ash recounts, "Being a fighter pilot was something I decided on since I was a little boy, between mom's military background and dad being an airline pilot. Lorens thought the same thing, and he joined the academy not too long after I earned my wings."

Ash brings the chocolate bar closer to him and cradles it in his hand, stroking his thumb rhythmically over the wrapper. "Never thought I'd end up fighting with the Imperials," he mutters.

"Hey," Ash speaks up again, "Thanks for hearing me out. When stuff hits the fan like this, I always feel like I need to reach out to someone. Hell, I made a real forgetin' dumbass of myself, what, with the stupid attention-grab back there," he ends with a chuckle.

"I'm from Vierte, but I had to give up my citizenship to fly for Aesthia." He sighs, slightly homesick. "What about you? I'm guessing... Mercana?"

"Yep, you guessed it. Moved to Aesthia fifteen years ago. Mercana's nice, and I miss the weather, but it's too expensive to live there nowadays."

Ash notices the voices fading back into the background din of the carrier. The handful of deck crewmen that stopped to gawk at the commotion are slowly returning to their tasks.

"Vierte, huh? I'm surprised. I actually thought you were Aesthian this whole time. What brought you to the Coalition?"

"...that is the tastiest thing I've had in a long time."

"Haha, same here," Ash replies. He lets out a sigh to relax.

"Say, Markus, where are you from?," he suddenly asks, "I don't think I've had a chance to ask you yet."

Ash lifts his head and looks at Markus. "My man!," he says with a chuckle and a smile, "You'll love this stuff, I swear."

Ash holds out the bar for Markus to break.

Ash purses his lips and sighs through his nostrils. He slips his finger underneath one of the folds of the wrapper, carefully peels the chocolate bar open and breaks off a square.

"So much for that," Ash quietly mutters to himself before putting the square in his mouth. He looks glumly at the wrapper and wonders if this is the last taste of home he'll ever get.
