who cares how your character looks like, what he's from or WHATEVER
if you like something, and you want to draw it, give it a personality, and WHATEVER you do with a character, thats totally cool and all up to YOU. you can literally do anything you want as long as youre not reselling it. thats the only restriction that comes with it
hell i have a spiral knights character, too.
idk why trogtor, dj charizard (oh that name), emgiell and squartle are in here. the only thing they do is attention whore and circlejerk.

I've developed backstories and a world for all of my ocs that isnt related to starbound/sk in any way really.
I kept the design as-is because I like it. and personally I dont think I could come up with any other design that'd be as good as it so I decided to stick with it.
I'm saying that still unoriginal and you are still using themes / assets / designs from different universes / games and patching them into your own and calling it original. I just believe you should try to make some more things original, as this is now the 4th character that hasn't had a single completely original concept in them, from what I've seen, and merely just lots of very slightly changed things from other games.
Here, let me attempt to give a visual example using my friend Nosferatu.
Now, lets say I like his appearance and other traits, so I want to use that. Thats cool, but since I want this to be an oc, I want to incorporate some original elements. Inspiration is fine, and I use some inspiration from a few things. Those emperor guards from star wars cus I like their red robes, general fantasy elements for the staff, and then I decide, hey, he's an oc, he needs a backstory. So I think of something.
This dudes name is Kothal, and although in his younger years he worshiped a dark elder god known as Rathian, when he disobeyed it once, it cursed him and his family to become vampires, and he realized how cruel the god was, leaving it. Now he just roams the world, attempting to live a normal life even though his vampire habits get in the way. Due to his past worship, he has some skills in dark magic.
Ta da. Here you can see me drawing from Nosferatu's design for that gangly impish look, and then the vampire like tone. This is inspiration, not direct copying.
Meanwhile, direct copying, or as you seem to be doing, is this.
I like Nosferatu. So I want this to be my oc. But since that is too obvious, let me change one or two things. Now he has tentacles and red eyes. And before people think this is copying, let me remind them that he exists in a separate universe and is unique.
I'm just trying to say you are getting too close to direct copying and less inspiration. And that isn't original.

im certain most OCs aren't created from thin air and are brought up from things people used in creative or entertainment media
the very, very, very first iteration of face was a lego character. obviously face has come a long way over the course of eight damn years that the only thing you can recognize about them is the green varsity jacket, which is there as a homage to the original version.

Flat, theres a difference between drawing inspiration from things for your oc, which, hey, is fine! If flatflyer is an oc that lives in the starbound universe, or even uses tech inspired by starbound? Great! Go ahead! But if they actually use designs directly from the game, thats where it isn't original.
How is that any better then the things people post in ycyl?
Even though these are sonic ocs, and hell, even appear to be made in some kind of creator, at least they have their own design, right? Not just something really blatantly copied. These are still bad, but at the rate of your ocs, they are still better.
I've changed stuff like the feet and also modified the hat/hands a bit, added a tail and changed the race"Hey guys don't worry I changed 4 things"
If you dont consider it an oc then thats your own problem, not mine.

Original Character. Original does not mean a screencap of your character in spiral knights, who doesn't even seem to have an original name, mind you, as the armor being worn is literally from an enemy in spiral knights called kats, as well as the hood being called a "Kat Claw Cowl."
I'm assuming peoples points by posting screencaps of things and saying its their oc is just an attempt in satire to show how you are acting.
At least put effort into your own designs and looks for your characters? Because the past 3 "ocs" have all been screenshots of game characters, and the only thing making them original is slight color changes, or defining what their age is.
