You fought each other and you got a lucky shot and killed him with the sniper rifle.
It is not practical to try to kill someone up close with a sniper rifle, its better to use a pistol or shotgun.
So yes, it is wrong that you got banned from the server for doing that, but it was most likely a bad server to begin with. Don't be upset, find a good DM server and stick there.
