For a free and powerful editing software, use Lightworks. The free version can export to Mp4 in 720p and is only missing features from the full version that hardcore professionals would need. It has multiple masking options, speed adjustment (including reverse), greenscreens, a completely customizable interface and a bunch of other features that I don't want to bother writing. I'd almost put it on par with Sony Vegas Pro.
