Off Topic / Building a desk: Need opinions on stuff
« on: January 31, 2011, 05:08:46 AM »

This is my current layout for the desk my father and I are constructing.

What I would like to hear from you guys is suggestions on what I should add to the desk in A) gaming and comfort-wise and B) things that will help with computer repairs and such.

The desk is fairly large, L-shaped and will be constructed with plywood, metal tubing and legs from my old desk.

(Note: Logo is in early, early, EARLY development)

Miga has won the company name contest with the name BlueTech Computer Services. I quite like it as it's the only one that's actually been catchy for me.

NOW FOR PART 2: Think of a slogan for it.

The chosen slogan creator will receive a free copy of Magicka ($10 game)

Here are the guidelines:

  • Must be original (No slogans that have been used before)
  • Must not sound cheesy or handicapped
  • Must have to (of course) relate to Computer services and (optionally) the color blue
  • Don't bother creating a logo or anything because I've got that covered
  • Must not be copyrighted (I don't want to get sued, lol)
  • Must be short enough to possibly fit in the logo image above
  • Must be submitted before February 15th!

IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES, YOUR SLOGAN WILL NEVER BE PICKED.

I would also like some criticism on this early logo mockup.

    Now get to it! :)

About Ubuntu

Taken from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ubuntu (pronounced /ʊˈbʊntuː/ oo-boon-too) is a computer operating system based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution and distributed as free and open source software. It is named after the Southern African philosophy of Ubuntu ("humanity towards others").

With an estimated global usage of more than 12 million users, Ubuntu is designed primarily for desktop use, although netbook and server editions exist as well. Web statistics suggest that Ubuntu's share of Linux desktop usage is about 50%, and indicate upward trending usage as a web server.

Ubuntu is sponsored by the UK-based company Canonical Ltd., owned by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth. Canonical generates revenue by selling technical support and services tied to Ubuntu, while the OS itself is entirely free of charge.

Features

(Ubuntu's interface. The entire UI is built with the GNOME shell and can be customized greatly. Click here for full size image)

Ubuntu is composed of many software packages, of which the vast majority are distributed under a free software license, making an exception only for some proprietary hardware drivers. The main license used is the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) which, along with the GNU Lesser General Public License (GNU LGPL), explicitly declares that users are free to run, copy, distribute, study, change, develop and improve the software. On the other hand, there is also proprietary software available that can run on Ubuntu. Ubuntu focuses on usability, security and stability. The Ubiquity installer allows Ubuntu to be installed to the hard disk from within the Live CD environment, without the need for restarting the computer prior to installation. Ubuntu also emphasizes accessibility and internationalization to reach as many people as possible. Beginning with 5.04, UTF-8 became the default character encoding, which allows for support of a variety of non-Roman scripts. As a security feature, the sudo tool is used to assign temporary privileges for performing administrative tasks, allowing the root account to remain locked, and preventing inexperienced users from inadvertently making catastrophic system changes or opening security holes. PolicyKit is also being widely implemented into the desktop to further harden the system through the principle of least privilege.

Ubuntu comes installed with a wide range of software that includes OpenOffice, Firefox, Empathy (Pidgin in versions before 9.10), Transmission, GIMP (in versions prior to 10.04), and several lightweight games (such as Sudoku and chess). Additional software that is not installed by default can be downloaded and installed using the Ubuntu Software Center or the package manager Synaptic, which come pre-installed. Ubuntu allows networking ports to be closed using its firewall, with customized port selection available. End-users can install Gufw (GUI for Uncomplicated Firewall) and keep it enabled. GNOME (the current default desktop) offers support for more than 46 languages. Ubuntu can also run many programs designed for Microsoft Windows (such as Microsoft Office), through Wine or using a Virtual Machine (such as VMware Workstation or VirtualBox). For the upcoming 11.04 release, Canonical intends to drop the GNOME Shell as the default window manager in favor of Unity, a graphical interface it first developed for the netbook edition of Ubuntu.

Compiz

Compiz is a system which allows the user to interact with the desktop as if it is a cube or a multiple sided shape. Each side of the "cube" is a desktop and users can switch between sides of the cube when they need more space for things. Compiz is normally built into Ubuntu and can be activated by installing the latest video drivers for your graphics card, and downloading CompizConfig Settings Manager. This can be done by running the following command in Terminal:
Code: [Select]
sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-managerAfter this, use the CompizConfig Settings Manager to change the settings for the cube. When you're finished, activate the cube by holding CTRL + ALT and clicking and dragging the mouse. You can also drag windows across sides by simply pulling them over the edge of the screen, and you can quickly flip between sides by holding CTRL + ALT and pressing the left and right arrow keys.

I really want this now. Can I have it?

Hell yes, you sure can. As stated above, Ubuntu is 100% free OS and always will be. But you still need to choose what package you want for it.

DESKTOP/LAPTOP EDITION - Supports 32-bit and 64-bit desktop and laptop PCs. You can get the most recent version (Maverick Meerkat 10.10) and install it on a partition only. If you want to test Ubuntu or install it with Wubi, you can get the Long-Term Support version, 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx).

NETBOOK REMIX - Specifically designed for Netbooks. This can also be ran on a desktop or laptop, but I'm not sure why you'd want to.

WANT TO JUST GIVE IT A TEST RUN?

Head to their website, download the .ISO file and burn it to a disc. When you boot up with the disc inserted, Ubuntu's menu will load up and ask if you want to either A) Install the OS, or B) run it from the Live CD. If you want to try it out before you install it, run it from the CD. This makes it so that your hard drive will not be touched, and the entire operating system will be temporarily ran off of the Ubuntu disc. Keep in mind though - this is only for playing around. You can't save anything because there is no storage space you can save it to.

WANT TO KEEP WINDOWS AS WELL?

Insert the disc while the computer is running. When promted, run Autorun.exe and Ubuntu will ask if you want to install Wubi, which allows you to run Ubuntu along side of Windows. This means that every time you turn your PC on it will ask you if you want to use Ubuntu or Windows! What a brilliant system!

OTHER VERSIONS OF UBUNTU WITH DIFFERENT SHELLS, YOU SAY?

Yes. There are currently plenty of distributions of Ubuntu, renamed and developed by other communities. Click a logo to go there!

I've built a game for my Computers ISU and it's looking really awesome.

The only thing is, I'm having trouble with sound effects.

See, I want it so that when I click the mouse anywhere on the stage, it will play a sound once.

I have the event listener down (I think) but I can't quite figure out the function/variable/whatever it is.

Anyone know about this?

"Just One Second (APEX Remix)" by London Elektricity. The song was used in preview for Gran Turismo 5's Ferrari 458 italia model, and it suited it well.

Listen to this song in 720p with headphones or a good sound system. LOUD.

I listen to it every day after school, twice, and it relaxes me so much. Just the perfect balance between soft and rough in this song is just... indescribable.

Do me a favor and just listen to it, once. You will enjoy it, trust me.

Mozilla Firefox VS Google Chrome

Firstly going to say this: I finally just switched back to Firefox. I'm so goddamn sick of Chrome, after a year of use I had to deal with having to refresh EVERY PAGE for it to load, dealing with Youtube not loading properly, waiting for images to load forever, and more. The only reason I liked Chrome (and possibly the only thing that Chrome is focused on) is that 0.2 seconds of extra speed. Firefox may be a teeny tiny bit slower but hell, it's far more stable.

In this thread, we're basically going to have an all out war between Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Post your opinions, some facts, flip your stuff, whatever. There is also a poll to vote. What you should post in this thread:

1.What browser I am using right now:
2. What I like about Mozilla Firefox:
3. What I like about Google Chrome:
4. What I hate about Mozilla Firefox:
5. What I hate about Google Chrome:
6. Fun fact:

Alright, have at it.

1. What I like about Mozilla Firefox: When I go to a webpage, the entire page is just THERE. No scan-style load like Chrome.
2. What I like about Google Chrome: Some of the extensions were cool. Also the UI is pretty smooth.
3. What I hate about Mozilla Firefox: Aside from being slightly slower? Not much at all.
4. What I hate about Google Chrome: Java SUCKED. Also pages would not exist according to Chrome until you refreshed.
5. Fun Fact: I think Firefox 4 Beta uses the same engine as Chrome. I THINK.

I really need to start this business. To put it in general, I'm trying to start a business as a computer technician.

So like, Repairs, optimization, hardware and software technics. I need you guys to come up with a name.

Person to come up with the best (unused) name will be granted a free Steam copy of A game of their choice under $15.

Ready, steady, go.

Due date: January 30th. After this due date, I will spend my $15 on a IDE to SATA adapter, and YOU GET NOTHING!

  • It does not have to have my name in it.
  • In fact, please try not to put my name in it.
  • Be serious. Make it sound official.
  • Don't bother posting a logo; I'm going to make that myself (Unless your logo is just a draft idea)
  • It must have "Computer Services" in it. Not just "Computers" or "Repairs".

Used a Driving Force GT wheel for the whole thing, 900 degrees of rotation and stick shift. This was difficult.

Game is DiRT2 of course. Music is "Crush" by Pendulum

Off Topic / Just informed of my cousin's death
« on: January 14, 2011, 09:00:23 AM »
I was just informed this morning that my cousin Ryan was killed in an accident with a snow plow.

Ryan Russell, a police sergeant who served the Toronto Police Service, was killed while trying to stop a stolen snowplow that had smashed through Toronto "for three hours" according to the Toronto Star newspaper.

His sister, my cousin Keitha, called my house. She was talking to my mom and I could tell she was crying.

The funeral is on Tuesday.
