So apparently when you open a port, you allow everyone in the world access to your computer which can compromise security. How exactly is this "no risk" or "safe" ? =/

Just out of curiosity (and also showing more data to him), what exactly IS port forwarding?

*noobish question I know, but he's expecting to see it on this forum. =/ *

18
also... do i have to start my server before starting the dedicated program? Or can I start it before?

Opening ports for Blockland will not open ports for banking. No worries.

From your Blockland folder, you can open a dedicated server: the black box appears, and your server is up.

Ah, I just ran it and now I understand... but do you still need to forward ports in order to have a dedicated server?

To BladeOfTheHorizon: I already know how to forward ports, and I've actually hosted before... the problem is I can't seem to convince my step father that it's not dangerous for a computer. They do a lot of banking and stuff online and they're afraid forwarding ports will compromise their banking information.

I just need enough people who know what port forwarding is to shed some light on the truth behind it all, whether it's dangerous or not, and if it consumes a lot of bandwidth.

Also, while I'm at it... how do you get a server to stay active when no one is in it? I've seen those before, and I've never really understood how it works.

thanks guys, need some more specifics. Just throw at me whatever you can.

Thanks Tails! I've overheard that it can possibly allow other people into your computer... is that true?

Add-Ons / Re: Flooding Script
« on: January 26, 2009, 11:49:48 PM »
I've never worked with the GUI before, and I'd really love to activate this mod~! So... I've put both files into my Addons folder as usual, but I can't seem to figure out what to do next. Can anyone provide a basic "how-to" on this? :D

edit: Ok, so I found something in my options that was hiding the button input before, so I got it working... but for some reason I can't stop the flooding! Also, the water seems to jump up in very unorganized spasms... unless that's how it's supposed to work? :s

I downloaded this, and activated it like I normally do... started it in minigames... and I can't get it to work. I hold the jet and aim up the wall as I jump, and I just fall as normal. What's wrong? :(

Ok, so I've been having this constant tug of war with my step father about forwarding ports. I've taken it into my own hands to getting the ports forwarded, but it looks like I've reached my limit. The only way I can possibly have it happen now is if I present him with some pros and cons of forwarding ports, along with the possible risks that follow.

I'm asking for no more than the truth and a non-biased brown townysis of the subject based on the Blockland user environment. If you all can help prove that this is a legitimate program/activity, then I may finally be able to start hosting... for good. :)

Thanks in advance to anyone who decides to help out. I really hope I'll get a good chunk of information that I can share with him.

Help / Limited projectiles?
« on: August 15, 2008, 12:29:18 AM »
When I use the wrench events to make a 3x3 rocket shooter... I can only shoot off about 30 or so rockets at a time, until a couple blow up... then I can start shooting more. The reason I bring this up is, I've seen youtube videos of people using the same concept but they're launching nearly 100 or so rockets at a time.

My question... is there a way to increase this capacity of airborne projectiles?

EPIC!!! That could make a seriously wicked scenario for a race of some sort.

I do wonder... how on earth do you make rockets rain from the sky like that? Enlighten an inspired noob. :3

Help / missing files?
« on: July 23, 2008, 12:41:56 AM »
When I run Blockland for the first time after installation (on Vista), the game works fine...

but when I try to run it a second time, the messages in the command window appear to be saying I'm missing files.

they all have "base" in front of them... but some of them are client... server... addon... other types. I'm not sure what to do about this, and I desperately need help.
