Games / Elite: Dangerous 1.3 - Powerplay
« on: January 11, 2015, 05:18:59 AM »

I can't link to the actual change logs themselves because they're posted on Frontier forums and linking to other forums is against the rules :(

What is Elite: Dangerous?

Elite: Dangerous is a continuation of the original Elite series, the grandfather of space simulators. The original Elite was released way back in 1984, followed by Frontier: Elite II and Frontier: First Encounters. They heralded a new era of gaming, introducing 1:1 scale, dynamic star systems, and seamless freeform landings on 1:1 scale planets.

The game was released on December 16, 2014. It currently features an enormous accurate recreation of the Milky Way galaxy and about 15 ships to fly in. The exoplanets (and our neighbors) have all been modeled after actual scientific data, while the remainder of the 400 billion stars in the galaxy utilize a procedural generator to forge new worlds for players to discover.

The game is selling for $59.99 or £39.99. Future paid expansions are anticipated and will add enormous new features, but Frontier Developments plans to release free updates regularly. It is a one time fee and grants you a license to the vanilla game and multiplayer service for a lifetime.

What can/will I be able to do?

A great multiplayer space simulator gives you a variety of ways to make some money. In Elite: Dangerous, you can be a trader, an explorer, a bounty hunter, a pirate, a miner, and more. The galaxy has three major factions (and a plethora of minor ones) that change based on player influence and events that happen. For example, one of the larger factions can be trying to assimilate a system into their control, and you can either help the larger faction take over the system or aid the minor faction in keeping control over it.

The game was just released and many features are still planned. In future expansions, players will be able to step out of the pilot's chair and walk around stations or even their own ships (if they're large enough). Some (but certainly not all) future updates are as follows:

  • Landing / driving / prospecting on airless rocky planets, moons and asteroids
  • Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
  • Combat and other interactions with other players and AI in the internal areas of star ports
  • Accessing richly detailed planetary surfaces
  • Availability of giant 'executive control' (capital) ships to players

Frontier Developments is extremely adamant about adding seamless planetary landings and atmospheric flight to the game since it was such a huge part of the earlier games in the series. An official development roadmap has not been devised yet, so I may have missed a few things.

DISCLAIMER:

Unfortunately due to the nature of the game, Elite requires a constant internet connection. This is because all planets are procedurally generated by a separate server. Storing all the procedurally generated planets on your hard drive for 400 billion star systems would take up an enormous amount of space and likely result in unsynchronized planet generation. Prices are also based on a real-time supply and demand system.

Off Topic / Ello: The ad-free invite-only social networking site
« on: September 29, 2014, 10:25:53 PM »

ello

What is it?

Ello is a new privacy-oriented social networking site. It's becoming popular for it's minimalistic layout and lack of advertisements. Some people are considering it as an "anti-Facebook" or a mashup of twitter and tumblr. Their goal is to create a social network that aims to reduce the amount of hate spewn about on social networking sites and to overall simply "make a statement" in the process.

How do I get in?

Ello is invite-only. This throws off a lot of people by making the website appear pretentious, but a key isn't hard to find. It will remain this way until the website leaves its beta state.

Who's on there?

Currently there are a few forumers on ello. Their forum and ello usernames are as follows:

  • Flame: @tidium
  • Ikares: @kgower1
  • BluetoothBoy: @lloid
  • Nal: @nalnalas
  • Daedalus: @crunchy
  • Kimon: @capitalistbusinessman

Off Topic / Am I crazy?
« on: September 04, 2014, 01:30:50 AM »
alright, some crazy stuff just went down.

for those of you who don't know, i live in a guest house kind of off to the side of my house. you leave through the kitchen and then outside in between the garage and the kitchen is a door to my room. so, i'm kind of separated from the house, but i share the west wall of my room and bathroom with the dining room. also, i'm loving scared of the dark, so night times have become kind of terrifying for me.

anyway, i've lived kind of comfortably in this house for a while (a little over a year), but i always felt as if i was being watched through the window at night. you know, just spooky feelings. i always have my back against the window because my computer is against the wall next to it, so i don't really ever see out of it unless i turn around. usually i get kinda weird vibes that my dad is watching me through it monitoring how much time i spend on the computer, but it's whatever. i tend to shrug it off and he never really comments on it anymore.

so tonight i was minding my own business when my dad came into my room. i turned around and faced him as he sat there in the doorway (there's a very small hall with my closet and bathroom door in this guest house.. thing) and glared at me not saying anything for thirty seconds. i thought he was super pissed at me so i asked him "what did i do?" and it elicited no immediate response. after this period of him just.. staring, he grunted and left the room.

of course, i thought i did something wrong, so i sat there for a bit and decided to go ask him what's wrong. i walked in through the kitchen and into my living room, which he was sitting on the floor on my sister's laptop (his is broken). my mom was in a recliner and my brother was on the floor watching television. i leaned against the doorway and the following conversation played out:

me: "what did you want, dad?"
dad: *silence*
me: "dad?"
dad: "i don't know what you're talking about."
me: "what do you mean you don't know what i'm talking about? you were literally just in my room."
*mom and my brother both look up at me and dad turns around*
dad: "what? no i wasn't."
me: "... what do you mean. don't play these games with me, dad. what did i do wrong? why did you come into my room?"
mom: "no, aaron, he literally didn't leave this spot. that wasn't your father in your room."

it went on for a while, them trying to explain to me that my dad was not present with me in my room at all. my dad has a twin brother, but i can tell the difference between them. that man in my room was my dad, but everyone in the house was saying that it was not him in there.

am i going insane or something? i don't really believe in the paranormal (i just have an irrational fear of certain things), but i certainly as forget don't want a doppelganger living on my property.

my mom told me to lock the door and sleep with my lights on tonight. needless to say that'll be easy.

has anyone else ever experience something this... weird?

Off Topic / Weird Windows account bug?
« on: August 21, 2014, 10:20:43 PM »

so... instead of being under a user file like my name or something, all of my documents and files are under the user "UpdatusUser." i know full well what this is--it's someting set up by nVidia (which is odd because i have an AMD setup). i never really noticed it until now, but this is kinda bugging me. it's not a huge inconvenience, but i can't change the name.

i've seen tutorials online about this and how to remove the UpdatusUser user folder, but that's not what i want to do. why is all of my stuff stored under here and how do i fix this? any whiz kids around that knows a thing or two about computers? i can't find a single person with a similar problem online

this is my users folder. no "Aaron" account anywhere (it's my name, before my last windows reinstall the user name was aaron_000)

Games / Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Where the forget are my advanced armor spheres

What is it?
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is an "expansion" of sorts to the third installment of Capcom's Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter 3 Tri. You play as a hunter who arrives in the quaint Moga Village, investigating a series of tremors believed to be caused by an enormous monster. Players can use the materials they gather from their hunting exploits to create a multitude of armors and weapons to assist them in their endeavors. It's a game that's very popular in Japan, however not so successful in the American and European markets (which is Capcom's reasoning for delaying the US/EU releases by like, a year). It has a version out for the Wii U and 3DS, the only differences being the Wii U has much prettier graphics and support for playing multiplayer online. The 3DS is limited to local wireless, but can be routed to support online play with the Wii U.

Weapons
There's a variety of weapon types available in MH3U. Twelve, in fact, and each one is special in it's own little way.

Blademasters
Hunters come in two types: Blademasters and Gunners. You can switch any time you want, but the armor and weapons are a little different. For example, Blademasters are up-close and personal with the baddies, meaning they have more straight up defense. Gunners aren't as likely being physically hit, but you gotta watch out for that fire breath! Because of this, Gunners' armor has higher elemental defenses rather than physical defense.

Sword and Shield
These weapons focus mainly on elemental damage and status effects in exchange for brute damage. Being one of the only types with shields (besides the lances), they're great for throwing a flurry of special attacks and blocking incoming damage. Seriously, a big monster can charge at you and you'll stumble back instead of being blown back by a steam train.

Dual Blades
Basically what you get if you swap your shield for another sword. Capable of unleashing a blizzard of attacks at the cost of defense, players can unleash a demonic power and do a substantial amount of damage to their opponent. Hunters wielding dual blades are awesome at creating large combos -- and each sword can even have it's own elemental effect!

Great Sword
A huge-ass blade that can do a ton of damage. It's so big that you can actually block with it (providing even more defense than a sword and shield), but attacks kinda slowly and is a bit difficult to master. Each time you block it reduces the sharpness a little bit, but you can sharpen any weapon with a whetstone. These baddies are a popular choice amongst experience hunters, but seem a bit cumbersome to the newbies.

Long Sword
It's like a Great Sword but a lot more swift and nimble. Very popular amongst most hunters. Can stock up power over time and unleash a "Spirit Combo," releasing a ton of quick and powerful strikes. Basically a huge katana.

Hammers
Your ordinary hammer. This thing crushes monsters under it's huge weight. Hunters can smash a monster's head repeatedly to stun them, allowing for even more blows. Very fun to use if you can handle the slower speed.

Hunting Horn
I'm... actually not sure what this is. It's basically a hammer, but you can play songs and provide buffs to yourself and allies. You can still smash monsters' heads and stuff, so that's all that matters.

Lance
A huge lance with a nice big shield to accompany it. They're really huge and are a bitch to carry, but you can block and attack at the same time.

Gunlance
Because the normal lance wasn't enough. A lance with a gun inside of it, basically.

Switch Axe
A nifty weapon that changes from an axe to a sword. Does a lot of elemental damage in it's sword form and can release a huge burst of it's element. Harder to carry in sword form, apparently.

Gunners
For when you don't want to get rough n' tough with the monsters. Big ol' ranged weapons that are great for picking off them at a distance, if you can maintain that distance, that is. Like I said earlier, benefits better from more elemental resistances rather than physical defenses.

Light Bowgun
A lightweight, easy to carry crossbow that shoots bullets. It doesn't come with as much firepower as a heavy bowgun, but basically they're really easily made and not hard to master. There is a HUGE variety of ammo types available for all the ranged weapons. Use the correct ones for the correct situations! Oh, you can also fit custom parts to them. Loves those elemental ammos.

Heavy Bowgun
The bigger but slower brother to the Light Bowgun. Can hit like a truck, but is a bit harder to carry. The only ranged weapon that can have a shield attached. They prefer the raw damage ammunition types, but you can use elemental if you really want to. Basically, it's a mobile artillery set. They're also huge.

Bow
Your average bow. Uses arrows instead of bullets, obviously. It's very versatile and can really be used for any situation, but it's more geared towards advanced gunners. You're able to run and shoot with a bow despite it's massive loving size, so it's loved for being a fast weapon. You would THINK that the bow would sacrifice damage for it's sheer attack speed, but you'd be wrong. This thing does lots of damage, and fast. Oh, it also has unlimited ammo.

Monsters
Okay, so you've got two types of monsters generally. The small ones and the big ones. Obviously the smaller ones are easier to kill, but each large monster is unique in their own little way. There's not much to say about these guys, so I'll just drop some pictures of a couple.

Small Monsters

There really aren't a lot of pictures of small monsters out there.

Large Monsters

There are a lot more than this, but I don't want to sap your bandwidth nor spoil anyone here. If you are really interested, go check out the wiki.

Players
If you play Monster Hunter 3 (Tri or Ultimate), list your preferred weapon and I'll drop you in over here. Just tell us your character name and favorite weapon type! Feel free to share guild cards as well.

Off Topic / Never Have I Ever...
« on: August 04, 2014, 05:50:12 PM »
Okay guys, let's play a back-assward game of never have i ever.

since this is a forum, people can't really drink or whatever all at once and take turns, so we're going to have to improvise.

so this is how it works: for example, if i say "Never have I ever owned a pet bird," the next person down would say "drink" if they have or "no drink" if they haven't. that person then says a "never have i ever," which the next person after him responds to.

easy enough, right? i'm just really bored because people are in school already

so, i'll start. Never have I ever eaten a mango.

Gallery / In-N-Out Burger Joint
« on: July 15, 2014, 09:14:30 AM »
I got really bored and decided to go onto a city build server at 1 in the morning.

The server had no brick mods whatsoever and it only had the default colorset. I then challenged myself to make a restaurant using these limited resources--and I chose my personal favorite fast food joint, In-N-Out.

Here's a link to the album because it's 7 AM and I don't want to embed images

The exterior is based off of the In-N-Out we have here in Tucson. Yes, I realize I'm missing the crossing palm trees, I'll add that in later

Feel free to rate, I guess...

I know the big In-N-Out sign looks absolutely stuffty, but it's the best I could do with the default brick set.

ugh, i need to get to bed.

I looked around and haven't found any music of MACINTOSH PLUS around, so I made a couple loops.

For those of you who don't know who MACINTOSH PLUS is, they make vaporwave music.

If this gets popular, I'll make more loops by them and some other bands.
