Modification Help / Serial Key System?

Hi, I was wondering how the Blockland key worked. I assume it uses some sort of online verification process but I was just curious if you wrote the coding yourself or if you got the base from somewhere else. I'm not trying to hack the system or anything as I already have a key but I am curious, I was looking into something like it for RTB to make more advanced usernames and stuff.

What is that exactly? is it a avi? .mov? GIF(i doubt it)?

Im very interested to know what it is for future reference.
