Ethan, I'd be up to building a desktop.

The only things upgradable in a Laptop are RAM and maybe Hard Drive if you're lucky.

Few questions before I start;
Do you have a Windows disk you can use? 7 or Vista.
Is $600 your absolute max?

I would say in a rating of 10, 10 being absolutely fantastic, I'd rate this at 7.

Nice graphics card. So-so CPU. RAM is good.

If anything, the CPU outperforms the GPU in performance.
The 9000 series is many years old, and even when it was new, the 9400 was by no means great.

I have a P4 system with a DX9 graphics card and its plenty good for basic games. Source runs perfect on it at medium-high graphics and Gmod also works. It can run Blockland perfect and is the cheese. Also, its attached to a big non-HD screen and a normal monitor so if I want I can lay in bed and play Source on my T.V. Its nice to do that.

It's not worth the money.
It'd be way better to save up for even a $400 system.

Main rig: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (Partition 1), Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit (Partition 2 (Instead of formatting and starting again from Vista to 7, I dual-booted so I could transfer all my data that I needed, and would have it still there if I forgot anything important))
Slave/Server PC: Windows XP Professional (Had Vista, but the motherboard spat the dummy)
3rd PC: Windows XP Professional
Laptop: Windows XP Professional

You really really need a new GPU.

What's your PSU?
Open up your case and look at the PSU, there should be a sticker on it saying the max wattage.

Also, you've got a great CPU to work off of, we won't have any problems with bottlenecking.

Laptop. Hmmfph.

With $600 I could give you a list of parts that would easily be better than your laptop, for a gaming desktop for you, if you were confident in building one.

well i haven't been seeing the static lines.

i have no idea if it'll still randomly sleep mode on me though.

'Static lines' and weird colorful objects seen, especially while gaming, are called Artifacts. They are most likely a GPU seriously overheating, or dying.
They are also seen when someone overclocks their GPU too much for the card to handle.
