The stuff like your PMs, moderator issues, bug reports should also show when you login if there's any new ones. I know I for one never check the RTB site, so it'd be quite nice to have a sort of "Mod Management Readout" that shows the number of new PMs, bugs and issues and allows you to click any one to open that interface in your browser.

Do you actually have a home rack mount and decent home connection, or are you looking at colocation?

If you're looking at setting it up colo you're probably better off just renting a Minecraft server - it'll be infinitely cheaper. If you've got space for it at home and a connection that will actually be good for hosting, your best solution would probably be to build one yourself (Newegg stocks server hardware)

But here's a good alternate idea if you're hosting from home: try using a laptop.
I've got a laptop here with an i5 and 6GB of RAM. It's plenty powerful enough for hosting a Minecraft server (my connection is just terrible). Get one with an Ethernet port, sit it cabled direct to your router.
As a bonus, since a laptop has an internal battery, that acts as a UPS. If your power goes out, there won't be any data loss and you can go and safely shut the laptop down if the outage lasts a while. You also don't need to set up RCON for the server unless you're going to be administrating it from out of home - you can just head out, open the laptop up and access it directly.
You can also claim you own your own hardware! People love that stuff.

If you have mod installation issues, use MultiMC. I seriously cannot endorse it enough, it makes it easy to maintain different MC installs for different servers and stuff.

Getting started:
  • Download the mods used (Forge 4.x, PlayerAPI, TFC, Smart Moving). Put them in the global mods folder (by default, folder named 'mods' in the same folder as the MultiMC program)
  • Open MultiMC. Create a new instance (left-most button)
  • Click on the Open Mods Folder button (blue folder with a star, fourth button)
  • Right-click the instance. Select 'Edit Mods'.
  • Drag Forge and PlayerAPI zips (as they come) onto the list area in the Jar Mods tab. Order matters - Forge first.
  • Extract the downloaded Smart Moving zip. Drag the TFC and Smart Moving Client for ModLoader zips into the Mods tab.
  • Close the Edit Mods dialog and double-click your instance to run. Simple!

Now any time you want to play TFC you have this TFC-installed copy of Minecraft. Just launch via MultiMC and you're good.
Note: If you're concerned about security issues, I've been using MultiMC for quite some time and my account's just fine.

Note 2: I'm pretty sure you can export an instance, but it doesn't export the actual mods used (as in the files), only the settings, so it's pretty useless. You can MANUALLY export it, though, but you can't just import that via a dialog.

I'm smelting my fifth bit of sphalerite into the mold now. That's NEARLY three pixels on the damage bar!

I've been cooking meat in the meantime. Nearly cooked all my beef - only these 41 porkchops to go!

I'm finally getting TerraFirmCraft due to all the nice things I hear about it.

Is it hard at all? I want hard.
It's not 'hard' per se (any more so than actual Minecraft) but it is actually more complex and takes longer - as such, your achievements will have actual weight. If I had to summarize, I'd say Wurm Online but Minecraft.

I'm playing right now since I got my server set up, but australian internet and all, you'd probably have 400 ping

I've found a nice big clay deposit (in a shallow river) so I'll have clay for moulds, and a water source for sluicing. I should be able to get metal tools within the next hour or so if this goes well.

Sans mods I really do find Minecraft boring

Building stuff is fun I just have no motivation to actually go and play the game to get the resources, because it's boring as forget


My modlist as it stands now is basically all the stuff I posted a couple of pages back, sans RedPower because it's not updated for 1.3.2 yet unless that happened today

I've been developing an OS from the bios up based on the initial ComputerCraft stuff, but with more security and configuration
For instance, there's a utility library (util) with easy support to load/save a config table. From the new shell program:

Those are the default keys. Anything not on that list can't be added, and the type has to match in the config file.
The file that generates from looks like this:

There's simple support for a login system, that since it's integrated into the shell cannot be circumvented (terminating out of it will shut the system down) - just create a <user-dir>/.login/access file containing the password. You can also create a "login" program in this directory for a script that runs immediately after login.

For managing your config, you don't have to edit the config file manually - there's a sset program I've included, too. sset allow-disk-boot false is probably the thing you want to do most. It's true by default, for installing stuff off a disk, but setting it to false ignores startup scripts from disk drives.

Some other misc stuff:
On the shell prompt, if you're in your user-dir it shows as ~. shell.resolvePath and shell.resolveProgram both obey this, too, so you can actually use cd ~ to move to your user-dir.
If you attempt to delete (or rm whatever) a folder with files in it, will prompt you to press enter to confirm (any other key cancels)
If you attempt to move or copy a file when the destination exists, prompts for confirmation as above
Added non-lua error output to move, copy, delete, cd, list
I've added some useful string and table functions, including:

string.sanitizePattern(sInput) -- Returns sInput with all pattern characters (%.()[]*+-?) escaped
string.split(sInput,sSeparators) -- Returns a table of all terms in sInput separated by any character in sSeparators. Only single characters supported - so string.split("hi, my name is tom. nice to meet you",",.") will return {"hi"," my name is tom"," nice to meet you"}
string.trim(sInput) -- Returns sInput with all whitespace removed from the left and right
string.ltrim(sInput) -- Returns sInput with all whitespace removed from the left
string.rtrim(sInput) -- Returns sInput with all whitespace removed from the right
All of this stuff should be part of the Lua standard libraries, but it isn't for whatever stupid reason (Lua's standard libraries suck)

util.writeConfig(tConfig,fnConfigFile) -- Writes the given config table to the given config file (same as readConfig - /.conf/<fnConfigFile>.c)
util.coerceValue(sInput) -- Takes a string and converts it to the closest matching lua type - boolean for "true" or "false", number for numbers, and strings like [a,b,c] will be converted to tables. String keyed tables aren't supported
util.formatValue(vInput) -- Reverse of util.coerceValue - takes something coerceValue might output and converts it to a string coerceValue can read. These are used by read/writeConfig for saving values

I'm working on integrating a routed rednet API into it, and network logon (ie ssh into your system) but that's a bit more complex and will actually take work.

If you're not scared of coding you can even have a copy. Just replace all the contents of mods/whatever your computercraft is/lua/ with this. Back the original one up, just in case. I don't know if I changed anything since last time I ran this so it might be bork.

Also, factions in TFC would work amazingly, just stop thinking of it as a get-swords-fight-dudes game and bam it's great

Especially since founding your own faction would mean a stuffload of work. The long-term value of things TFC adds would actually add some meaning to joining an existing faction, since you can't basically be endgame alone in an hour.

And forts and stuff would actually be hard to break into

I mean holy stuff why does that sound like a bad idea, at all


Another nice addition would be padlocks. You could make a padlock that comes with a key, attach it to a chest, that chest now requires the key to be in your inventory to open. Same for wooden doors.
You can make copies of the key by crafting it with some clay to get a mold, then filling said mold with metal and letting it cool, so you can let other people get to your stuff. Or hide another key near your house so you don't get locked out.

I love that he openly defied them, but I also hate it. It's both good and bad.

On the good side, yes, I agree that from what we've seen Windows 8 is a step backwards in terms of openness, leaning more towards the Apple "closed platform" that I hate so much. I think it's a good sign that Microsoft is reaching out to help - albeit the most profitable one ever - an indie game to certify. But that begs the question of why should you need to certify anyway?

But on the downside, it shows a disregard for his fans on Notch's part. (not to mention rudeness! sheesh) Minecraft is his baby, sure, but I'm sure there's a lot of people who play it who might also want to use Windows 8 without having to maintain more than one OS. It's basically a big unwarranted "forget you" to those people, whoever they are and however many of them there may be.


Then again, I think the whole certification thing is a guarantee of performance, not a requirement to run it on the OS. If it's the latter, that's a whole new height of gigantic-loving-mistake for Microsoft.
