Off Topic / Sarah Palin in 2012.
« on: September 14, 2010, 09:11:50 PM »
What do you think are Palin's chances of getting the GOP nomination in 2012?

If she indeed gets nominated, I am without exaggeration going to start making plans to move out of the country.

Games / Deus Ex Invisible War
« on: September 14, 2010, 08:44:55 PM »
So I recently decided to give this game another try. At first I was disgusted with the game, and honestly it is really dumbed down from the first game in the (soon to be) trilogy, Deus Ex. But the fact is is that it still follows in the same vein as the first one and while the level design isn't as inspired (my biggest complaint is that the various options such as stealth, brute force attack, hacking keypads and covert entry into a building) are much more obvious in this game, all in all, the level design seems to have lost some of the art from the first one. Either way, if you decided not to try this one after Deus Ex I say go ahead. From what I see so far, it still has the same great Deus Ex storywriting.

Creativity / OBLIGATORY WRITING THREAD.
« on: September 13, 2010, 10:16:57 PM »
Hey folks. Let me start out by saying that I hate writing fiction, but as I pride myself as a bit of a writer, I figured I'd take a stab a little short story to see what you guys think. Read and hopefully enjoy.

"Rebellious Teenager" by Sirrus

I never wanted to fit into a "stereotypical" anything roll, but as a wiser man than myself once said, some just have it thrust upon them. Simply put, I was the rebellious teenager. I had made the decision many moons ago to not mentally subscribe to any ideal or opinion that wasn't a direction I wanted to be headed in life. As it turns out, this included many things that the stereotypical teenager rebels against.

I grew my hair long, I didn't shave. I didn't put any contrived effort into how I dressed; in fact a manufactured image was the antithesis of what I was trying to accomplish. The latest mutation of the idea of a rebellious teenager that has taken many faces through the generations but has remained omnipresent as long as people have felt the need to define themselves as individuals was in my opinion a simple desire to be the opposite of the established way of thinking.

But in my generation, it seems, this redefining of oneself and the adolescent need to rebel was repackaged and sold in a consumerist, capitalist free-for-all. A "unique self image" was something that could be taken off of the shelf and purchased. This is what I needed to get away from and, in a sense, what I decided to "rebel against". Rebelling against manufactured rebellion.

Unfortunately this does not earn you many friends in the jungle of a public high school where it seems like every person walking around me was just a mirror reflecting the intricately designed corporate ideal of what teenagers were all about. Obviously someone had done their job right, because it appeared to be working beautifully.

All this personal reflection led to a great feeling of self-awareness. I was instantly and somewhat frighteningly aware of how the people around me were like notches in the gears of an elaborate, well oiled clock with no hands attached to it- I didn't see the point of this dynamo of social nothingness. Without hesitation, the second we were in high school we had stuff fed down our throats about the importance of college and degrees and worldly success- for what? To go become accountants and lawyers and CEOs and very successful individuals that have to grapple with the question "did I lead a fulfilling life?" as they wind down to death.

This all came to head during a presentation from some group about the importance and history of education. I don't know what compelled me to do it, but I stood up and walked on stage, shooing the person at the podium away from mic. I cleared my throat and started speaking words that barely had time to materialize before they exited my mouth.

"This once beautiful ideal of education and betterment has become institutionalized garbage bent on turning out productive but unfulfilled workers. The clothes you're wearing were designed by what you're subliminally trying to subvert by putting them on every morning. The music you listened to was written and performed by entrepreneurs, not artists. If you want to learn something I suggest you go to a library or teach it to yourself using the greatest invention of the 20th century and the very reason we call this the post-modern era- the internet. Believe it or not, the internet is more than Facebook. It is more or less the human race's collective knowledge and most of you have access to it in your pockets right now. Please "wake up" so to speak, find out what you believe in and what you truly enjoy then devote your life to doing that so you can die with no regrets. Thank you."

I then exited the auditorium in front of a speechless crowd. I couldn't and never would know it, but they had been unconsciously thinking the same thing the whole time.

Meh. It's alright. It may have gotten a little bogged down in a lot of my personal views, but I didn't want to write some boring story about a race car driver or astronaut or solider or something like that.

Games / What should I play next?
« on: September 12, 2010, 02:06:51 PM »
So I just beat and did most of the fun stuff in GTAIV. I tried to start up a Machinima in GTAIV, but it didn't take off like I'd hoped and I realized that multiplayer is going to get old fast, so I need a new game to play. I already own a stuffton of games that I haven't played completely through yet, so I was wondering what you guys think I should play next.

Hey folks.

I'm not talking about breaking actual security keys, of course, but I was wondering if there was some kind of tool that used my computer to its full power to do mock brute force attacks. I'm curious how fast my computer is for raw math and I wanted to see how fast it could crack various encryption keys.

Does anyone else enjoy this activity? Holy stuff folks, this past Labor Day weekend I was at some friends of my parents' cabin in Pennsylvania, which had an ATV and they let us haul ass at 35-40 MPH through the mountains on it. The cumulative hour perhaps that I was on it was more fun than every second of video games I've ever played combined, raised to the power of ten. Holy stuff. It makes me want to move out to the country and buy a whole bunch of land.

Creativity / First GTAIV movie.
« on: September 03, 2010, 08:29:46 PM »
I know it's nothing insane, but I just wanted to experiment with the movie editor and gathering/editing clips for a decent length movie. One reason it's not longer is because it's kind of hard to do insane stuff in this game. Well, not necessarily hard to do but it's difficult to find great spots to do it. The first three clips are just random occurrences (or at least randomly turned out cool, especially in the first one) and the last one is me loving around and filling up time a bit.

*hurr durr before you say anything I know I spelled Occurrences wrong in the video

Off Topic / OOOOH LOOK AT ME I'M A MAC EVERYTHING JUST WORKS
« on: September 03, 2010, 07:05:00 PM »
A bit of backstory for this little tale.

At my school we have short assembly every day for different events, which usually ends up being speakers or presentations from people in the community or abroad. I do A/V for this little gathering and this involves getting out of 1st ~5 minutes early to go down and set this up.

STORY.

So I roll up in the auditorium like normal and find that the two people presenting today need a slide show and a mic. They plug the flash drive into the computer (A laptop running Windows) while I set up the mic. Once back at the soundboard with the laptop next to it, I pull up the slideshow and see that all the pictures had red x's for broken links in place of the pictures... kind of a problem when the slideshow consists of only pictures and they were planning to refer directly to the pictures.

Okaaaay, odd, and a potentially unfix-able problem but one of the guys that was presenting asked if we could just set up his laptop on the podium (which had a working copy of the slide show). We had video hook-ups and have done it before so I said sure. I brought the necessary VGA cable down there and was plugging that into the floor jack when he asked me "DVI-D or VGA?" I answered him, a bit befuddled as VGA is kind of a standard for laptops. I look up, and what is he brandishing but a Mac complete with what's probably $60 of video adapters hanging off of its annoyingly proprietary video out jack.

We hook it up, and at this point the bell has rung and kids are filing in. I make the necessary hand signals to my compadres in the back of the room and the projector is set to the requisite input... nothing. This is normally a matter of pressing windows key+F8 or whatever the key sequence is for switching display set-ups on Windows laptops, but this guy didn't know it and we sure as hell didn't. Everyone was sitting down at this point so I told him I'd bring it back to the desk, and we'd try hooking it up there and working on it.

They started their presentation and we (me, two other A/V guys and the faculty that works with all the A/V stuff in the auditorium) sat at the Mac for ten minutes trying to figure out how the forget to switch it to presentation or video out or whatever mode. Nothing. I'm pretty damn computer literate, so is the faculty and the other two guys aren't idiots, though I don't know if they are as well versed in the language of computers. The point is is that between us we couldn't figure out how to switch it around, the presenters had to awkwardly say "Well we DID have pictures but you know how that is" and for the rest of the day I get asked where WE forgeted up.

OOOHHH MACS EVERYTHING IS SO EASY JUSTING LONG GAAAAHHHH

tl;dr: Macs apparently aren't user friendly enough that I can figure how to do something (that takes two keystrokes and half a second on a Windows laptop) in ten minutes.

I just bought a print of Nighthawks by Edward Hopper. It is literally the only piece of art I've ever been compelled to own and display in my room.

Obviously it will be an anomalous day due to idiots running around doing stupid stuff because they think the world is going to end, but do you think some kind of large spiritual or apocalyptic event will occur on December 21st 2012?
