Add-Ons / Alarm pack.
« on: September 30, 2008, 07:57:38 PM »
IF YOU DOWNLOADED BEFORE OCTOBER FIRST, 7:18 A.M. EST, REDOWNLOAD. It has been confirmed that it will work on re-download. You can either redownload or rename sever.cs to server.cs

This is my first add on (that's not a colorset)

This idea almost came to me in a dream. I was laying down to sleep and looked at my alarm clock and said "that needs to be a blockland sound..." and drifted into slumber.

please please please please please please PLEASE tell me soon if I forgeted ANYTHING up. (that means anyone who's made these before, take a look at the file contents; especially server.cs)

Anyway, this add-on includes (so far) an audio recording of my personal alarm clock in several flavors. It has a looping ogg voribs (if you want it to go on forever) one that repeats ten times, one that repeats five times, and one that repeats once.

Finally, the link.

Gallery / Sirrus' FINISHED AM app. (picture heavy)
« on: September 29, 2008, 08:26:03 PM »
(note, you can skip the W.O.T., I just felt like typing it to describe the construction and a little bit about the build)

It's finally done! It's fuh-hu-hinally done! I cannot express to you in words how happy I am to be done with this build. It's not that I've spent a ridiculous amount of time on it, like, say, months or anything like that, it's just that the past two days all of my free time has been consumed by this build, and I must say it's turned out nicely.

It clocks in at just over 2,700 bricks, (2,500 being the minimum for an app) My goal here was to do a sort of small-type townhouse-ish build. What came out was a smaller house, but a nice one with amenities like a pool on the roof (yes, a pool on the roof) a deck type dealy and a nice garden balancing out the house.

Anyway, I've spent... let me think... 15 hours on this, reworked it twice, and started with very little idea of how it was going to turn out (it was to originally include three floors). I worked on it as I went, made changes and worked on elements as they cam e up, a very new style for me. Fortunately, I think it turned out and I'm proud to present me [AM] application.

And finally, the bedroom.

If there's anything else you'd like to see, please note it in the thread. Comment, Critique, x/10, and verdicts from the AM judges with comments or suggestions, please.

Suggestions & Requests / Kill server colorsets in the face.
« on: September 29, 2008, 06:29:21 PM »
I hate building something in a server and loading it in single player only to see it forgeted up in color transit. Is there something that can be done about this like disabling color sets in servers?
I know this won't be a very popular request, but it's something I feel needs to be done anyway.

Gallery / Sirrus' AM Application (Kind of WIPy)
« on: September 28, 2008, 08:58:52 PM »
I want to stab this build in the face.

In all seriousness, I'm kind of tired of this build. I've done what you saw here in the time span of roughly... 6 hours? Non-stop building. I'm tired of this stupid build and I want to finish it. Anyway.

This is a WIP. The structure is essentially done (I need to add a few more windows) all I need at this point is furniture, but I figured I'd get your input now so if I need to change/work on anything shape-wise, I could do that before I started painstakingly creating furniture (I hate interiors).

Anyway, the pics. (By the way, I changed a few things in terms of settings and took DOF screen shots, so it should look better in terms of brick-sparklies)

The basic shape.

Close-up of garage and side of house. I don't know why I took this one

The garden out back. I really like this part.

Creativity / The epic image.
« on: September 26, 2008, 05:07:34 PM »
I was inspired by Anybody to do a stick-figure war-type scene spanning several pages, this is what I have so far;

Note that this was drawn with three different pens (general, bold, and detail) on Graph paper (edited out with photoshop) and nothing else. I did stitch together the two images in Photoshop, but other than that, these weren't tampered with at all. (besides the Posterizing to remove the graph lines, which took away some of the nice pen effect.) If you want a higher-quality version (2508 x 3288) un-edited, contact me.

I'll be adding on to this, this project is the only thing getting me through the day :P.

General Discussion / The Blockland Builder's Guide
« on: September 21, 2008, 09:08:31 PM »
I'm working on this guide for building in Blockland.
It's not quite done (mostly because it's a big commitment, and I'm not going to finish it if the community doesn't like the idea.)

Anyway, here's what I have so far. Tell me if I should keep going.

BLOCKLAND BUILDING GUIDE

SECTION 1: OPENING NOTES
Section 1.1 Introduction.
The blockland building guide was written by the Committee of Better Builders as a way of benchmarking building standards in official buildings. This is in no way a strictly enforced code, but is more of a guideline. Some clans or building groups may choose to accept this as a rigorous code, but it's intent is to simply lay out an outline to the best possible form of construction in blockland.

Section 1.2 Opening notes.
The blockland building guide is broken up into 10 chapters. Chapter 1 is cordoned off for introductory notes and general guidelines, just as chapter 10 is sectioned for closing remarks. The remaining 8 chapters are broken up into several common sets and subsets of buildings and their respective guides.

Section 1.3 Subsection notes.
Sections are the starting point for subsections. In sections 2-9, subsections will signify subsets of the building type presented in the section. For example, section 2 (houses) subsection 2.3 is “Medium sized houses” and ever 2.3.whatever is the specific guides, with four digit sections denominating notes on specific guides.

SECTION 2: Houses.

Section 2.1 Introduction to houses.
Houses are probably the most basic form of blockland building. They are the go-to project for anyone looking to build something. They range from the nubbiest of builds (32x32 with 1x1x5 walls) too the most elaborate and challenging building projects. This section will give you a good outline of what you have to do to make a good one.

Section 2.2 Large sized houses.
Large houses are meant to definitely meant to be bigger undertakings. A Large house does not mean a bigger baseplate, and thought should be put into whatever you build.

Section 2.2.1 Detailing.
Large houses should contain moderate amounts of detailing. Detailing magnitude should be kept consistent throughout the entire build, and detailing should be kept contingent with detailing in other parts of the building.

Section 2.2.2 Shape.
When building a large house, unless used wisely, keep away from picking a large baseplate and staying within that. Take a 16x32 and build a cool shaped house with that. Use more than one floor, build each floor different. Experiment and find something that works for you.

Section 2.2.3 Surrounding objects.
Build everything around the house. This includes the yard, paths, fences, flowers, etc. This adds a touch of thought and class to your builds. Exteriors are just as important as interiors, for example, taking an extra 20 minutes to build Ivy on the side of an empty wall adds a sense of realism to your builds that clan leaders or Gallery lurkers will enjoy.

Section 2.2.4 Structure.
In large builds, it is VERY important to have an idea of what you're going to do. It's a tough spot to get stuck in the middle of a build and have to tear down a large section of what you build to continue. Make a mental plan of the house and how you're going to build each section.

2.2.5 Interiors.
In large builds, interiors are very difficult. Mostly because the larger the house, the general consensus is there's more interior space. Most gallery-goers call a build unfinished without interior objects. And with so much floorspace to fill, it's pretty difficult to fill that with the efficiency of smaller houses (because spread out objects look bad, use rooms and larger objects to make your objects closer together- this is really important!)

Section 2.3 Medium sized houses.
Section 2.3.1 Notes on medium houses.
Medium houses are interesting, because they need to have the attention to detail of small maps, but the decent interior size of larger houses. Making a good medium house can be just as hard as making a good large house.

2.3.2 Shape.
At this size, you could probably get away confined to a single, square baseplate. 48X48 would probably be defined as a medium to large house as long as you use two floors. Again, as tempting as it may be, if you're going to use all of one baseplate, as unappealing as this may seem, make sure to use a setback on the second floor to avoid making a completely square house (even if you make a roof, it's a very basic shape)

2.2.3 Layout.
Layout is crucial in small houses. With large houses you can have a huge house with lots of interior space, however, as you creep down to smaller houses, you need to be able to maximize the space in terms of interior objects. Use as much space as possible. If the house sits on a terrain build, build a basement. Don't waste any space and use the space allotted efficiently.

2.2.4 Structure.
Much the same as large houses, make sure you have an idea of what you want to build. Pay special attention to whether or not you need to build exterior elements that are attached to the building (such as a box window) while you're building the basic shape of the house, or whether or not you can build the basic structural element of most buildings (2x4x3s staggered) and then come in and delete some and add it in later.

2.2.5 Surrounding objects.
Medium houses work on a ratio with the actual house and surrounding objects. The more extravagant the house, the more you can slack on things in the vicinity of the house (however, the more you work on the exterior, the better the overall build will be!) But, if you use less detailing on the actual house, you should probably work very hard on the exterior to make a good build.

On a recent trip to downtown L.A., I started at the L.A. Cathedral, walked up to the Disney Performance hall and then to the U.S. Bank tower. Here are some of the pictures that I think turned out.

I also have some good ones of the Grand Canyon, but it was a hazy day and I want to do some photoshop work before posting them.

General Discussion / Cookie emote- good or bad?
« on: September 20, 2008, 08:24:50 PM »
Am I the only one tired of this cookie silliness? It's the only (slightly) useful emoticon we have, and it seems like the only thing we use it for is noobs spamming them in add-on threads that they like. From this point, they either need to be expanded into something bigger (an entire system for giving cookies?) or completely done away with. I loving hate anyone that says  ":cookie:'s for anyone who etc.... "
This is kind of rant-ish and will probably get moved to Drama, but what does everyone else think?

Clan Discussion / BDU / {CC}
« on: September 19, 2008, 08:02:57 PM »
BDU/{CC}

History
BDU and {CC} were two prominent clans both making there way up there. Oft' described as two of the "nubbier" clans, we carried on. The founders of the respective clans, Pandan and Woodland_creature met one stormy night in a small back alley of London. What they orchestrated that night was the joining of the two greatest clans ever, making the greatestest clan. Ever.

Going ons.
As of now, we're primarily a building clan. We tend to work on bigger projects until we finish them and make something prodigious, or come up with something cooler and ditch that one. We hold the occasional death match or zombie survival, but for the most part we build and hang out in the server.

Application to the clan
We like to think that we have a rigorous screening process, but we really don't. If you want to join the clan, show up in the server and build something other than a box house. If we like you as a builder and a person, we'll probably let you in. Really.

Members list.
So here's our portfolio of tried and true builders. At least the ones we haven't mysteriously fazed out of the clan.

Misc.
We don't have any projects of now, but we'll have some soon and there'll be a section for it. Trust me.

We have a website, but it's in kind of a cocoon phase. In the meantime, check out our forums. http://bduclan.19.forumer.com/

That's it for now. If you have anything to tell me, PMs work fine.

I have officially sworn off interior objects, so this is more or less done.

Edit: Yes, I know these are eye-bleedingly bad pictures. I have a stuffty stuffty computer, so don't post "lol wut bad srnshots".

Note that the house sits on a block because it was part of a larger terrain build.

General Discussion / Sirrus home builders.
« on: September 17, 2008, 07:04:43 PM »
Hey everyone; I'm tired of building houses just for a mediocre gallery response, so I'v decided to start making houses for those less building-ishly talented than us.

To get a house, you need to fill out the following form and PM to me;

1. How big?

2. How many rooms?

3. What kind of shape?

4. Anything else?

I'll make you the basic house- this means the form. No furniture, no lights, no extras. You have to come in and do those. All the building will be done, you just need to come in and add furniture 'n' such.

And finally, just so that you know you won't be getting a terrible box house, here is some of my work;

Suggestions & Requests / Working subway problem solved?
« on: September 15, 2008, 05:22:02 PM »
Okay, when watching some newer guy's video of a really simple water-ride type build, I had a sudden stroke of inspiration.

(here's the video, so you know where I'm coming from)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQMg7O8sJ_Y

Okay, looking at how rapids move you along, I was thinking that maybe the subway doesn't need to be a vehicle. Look at doors. They are neither bricks nor vehicles nor items. Meaning that you could create a subway spawn brick (for this to be executed well, you would need to have an 8x8 subway car that maybe held four people) and, when your player "entered" the subway car, it would mount you and act as rapids, except keeping you in the car and moving the car with you.

So, in short, it would put you in the middle of a rapids block and draw a subway type car around you.

Could this be done?
