Games / Nintendo introduces actual accounts
« on: February 17, 2016, 01:49:17 AM »
https://accounts.nintendo.com/

Nintendo already started putting an end to their awful and dated "your digital games die with your console" policy with Nintendo Network IDs, but now they're introducing accounts where you can tie everything together with all your separate Nintendo consoles (including the upcoming NX), websites, and mobile games (like Miitomo). It'll also be used for Club Nintendo's successor, "My Nintendo." Current functionality is limited to...well, pretty much nothing, but you can at least create an account, either from scratch or with your NNID, Google+, Facebook, or Twitter.

Welcome to the 21st century, Nintendo! Nice of you to join us.

Games / Firewatch - A wilderness mystery (Out now!)
« on: February 08, 2016, 03:22:07 PM »

From the game description:

The year is 1989. You are a man named Henry who has retreated from his messy life to work as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. Perched high atop a mountain, it’s your job to look for smoke and keep the wilderness safe. An especially hot, dry summer has everyone on edge. Your supervisor Delilah is available to you at all times over a small, handheld radio—your only contact with the world you've left behind. But when something strange draws you out of your lookout tower and into the forest, you’ll explore a wild and unknown environment, facing questions and making choices that can build or destroy the only meaningful relationship you have.

Images and words don't do the game justice, to really see what it's all about check out the videos on the Steam page.

I watched Vinny of Vinesauce play the first part of the game last night, and I'm thoroughly hooked. The game looks amazing visually, the banter between Henry and Delilah is perfect, and the big mystery was only just starting to appear when his early-streamer copy ended about an hour or two in. If you're interested in seeing what the game itself is like, you can watch Vinny's vod here.

The game is out for PC/Mac/Linux and PS4, and you can get 10% off on Steam until Feb. 12th.

Games / System Shock 3 teased
« on: December 08, 2015, 02:48:29 AM »
Just yesterday Otherside Entertainment put up a strange site with a countdown, but unfortunately for them they didn't conceal the end result very well and someone uncovered it with a little digging: a teaser for System Shock 3

It can only be assumed that if there's any more information being revealed it won't happen until the timer is officially done, I can't wait

Edit: The "break-in" was patched, with a message from SHODAN: "Your intrusion was part of my design."

Games / Downwell - Get high on gems and shoot frogs with your shoes
« on: October 21, 2015, 09:12:28 PM »

Downwell is a game where you, uh...go down a well. But the well is full of monsters! Your only weapon is the unconventional but effective Gunboots, which can shoot downwards to slow your descent and kill enemies. The batteries can only power so many shots before they need to recharge, requiring you to briefly land (on either a platform or an enemy's head) before being able to shoot again. Pick up weapon modifiers to change your Gunboots' bullet type, each one taking a different amount of charge per shot. Collect gems to buy things from the occasional store, and accumulate them across all runs to unlock new color palettes and character styles.

Think of it like a hybrid of Super House of Dead Ninjas and Spelunky. Better yet, it's only 3 bucks!

Games / Nuclear Throne - Unofficial online co-op mod emerges
« on: October 01, 2015, 03:58:31 PM »

Watch the trailer

Nuclear Throne (previously Wasteland Kings) is a fast-paced, brutally difficult action rogue-lite from Vlambeer, developer of such games as Super Crate Box and Ridiculous Fishing.

The world is over. A long time ago, the apocalypse wiped out all human life on Earth. No one knows how or why it happened, but it no longer matters. In the irradiated wasteland that emerged, new life appeared. Mutants, the only creatures left to inhabit the planet. Over time, a legend began to spread...a mysterious structure in a palace far away, said to have the power to restabilize the world, guarded by sentinels made of pure energy. Some say a mutant fought its way to this place and sat upon the great stone seat, but what became of them? Despite their efforts the world remains the same, and thus the struggle must continue.

You must reach the Nuclear Throne.

Features

  • Intense top-down twin-stick shooter action. Only one life to live.
  • Play as one of 12 characters trying to reach the Nuclear Throne, each with their own passive and special abilities, and return order to the wasteland.
  • Collect radiation to level up and mutate. Acquire homing bolts, restore health by killing, smash through walls, and more. Reach max level and choose your Ultra Mutation to even the odds.
  • Swap your trusty Revolver for over 100 other weapons, from Laser Pistols to Crossbows to Gatling Bazookas. #verifyvenuz
  • Never-ending fun! Defeat the true final boss to loop, putting you back at stage 1 with more enemies to kill, new bosses to face, and deadlier weapons to find.
  • Steal a Crown from the Crown Vault to modify your run. Beware that every upside must have a downside, and multiple entities are watching...
  • Plenty of secret areas, characters, secondary player skins, and weapons to discover.
  • Compete to get the most kills in the same layout against other players, either once a day with the character of your choice in the daily run, or as many times as you want with a locked setup every weekend in the weekly run.
  • Play with a friend using local co-op.

Fish

  • Fish can roll.
  • Gets more ammo whenever ammo drops.
  • Upgraded ability lets you roll forever.
  • Starting character.

Crystal

  • Shield ability lets you reflect or destroy projectiles.
  • Greater max health.
  • Upgraded ability raises your shield faster and allows you to teleport to your cursor.
  • Starting character.

Eyes

  • Telekinesis bends projectiles away while pulling everything else in.
  • Much greater field of view in dark areas.
  • Upgraded ability strengthens telekinetic power.
  • Unlocked by reaching the Sewers: Level 2-1.

Melting

  • Corpses can be triggered to explode, destroying projectiles and harming enemies.
  • Greatly decreased max health.
  • Increased radiation drops.
  • Upgraded ability causes bigger explosions.
  • Unlocked by dying.

And many more...

The game has reached official release status, but that doesn't mean development is over! There are still a few kinks to work out, and some secret files that haven't been utilized yet...

Purchase options

Nuclear Throne is $11.99 regardless of how you buy (with the exception of Humble Store, which likely just needs an update), whether on PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, or PS Vita. The game will be available on PS3 at a later date.

  • Humble Store: DRM-free plus a Steam key. 90% profit goes to Vlambeer.

Games / Snakebird
« on: September 22, 2015, 11:35:52 AM »

Snakebird, simply put, is a puzzle game where you collect fruit and reach the exit. It's never as easy as it sounds, though, is it? You control one or more snake-like birds, whom you must lead around the level inch-by-inch while gravity pulls down on them. Each fruit you eat in your quest to open the portal makes you a little longer, simultaneously making it much easier to turn back on yourself and get stuck. Be careful, the game may look cutesy and childish but some of these puzzles are devilishly difficult. Later levels even toss in movable blocks and teleports to really crank things up a notch. Check out the trailer to see some of the challenges you'll face, or try it for yourself with the demo. The full version features over 50 levels and can be purchased for $6.50 from the official site DRM-free with a Steam key included, or straight off the Steam store for $7.00 if you so desire.

(Full disclosure: I don't actually own the full game. I just played the demo and thought it was a really neat concept that I'd never seen before, so I wanted to share, despite being way too dumb to justify buying the retail version.)

Games / Konami is reportedly quitting console games
« on: September 18, 2015, 05:02:24 PM »
Remember how Konami said they were going to focus on mobile games? Apparently they weren't lying, and have decided to drop console game development entirely in its favor. Hope you guys like MGSV, because if this is all right then it's the last real Konami game you'll be seeing for awhile except for Pro Evolution Soccer.

Games / Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows
« on: September 17, 2015, 11:39:04 AM »

As promised back in the Kickstarter days, Yacht Club Games is releasing their first Boss Knight campaign today, Plague of Shadows. It lets you play through the game as Plague Knight, with remixed stages, different gameplay mechanics, and a new story.

The DLC is completely free to everyone who owns Shovel Knight on all platforms, and requires either completing the main game once or using a special code to play. The update should be out on PC for the US right now, with other platforms and EU getting theirs within the next few hours.

Games / A Borderlands movie is in the works
« on: August 28, 2015, 01:41:44 PM »
Games? Off Topic? It's a movie about a game, I dunno.

Avi and Ari Arad (known for the Spiderman and Iron Man movies) are reportedly producing a Borderlands movie for Lionsgate.

We all know how movies based on games tend to turn out...but Tales from the Borderlands is like 95% video, 5% game and it's pretty awesome, so I'm hopeful. As long as it doesn't turn out like the Halo movie.

Games / Black Mesa is now on Steam
« on: May 05, 2015, 10:05:11 AM »
Following the Black Mesa Research Facility countdown reaching zero moments ago, the modern, third-party remake of Half-Life is now available on Steam.

Here's the thing:
- It's Early Access
- It costs $20 now and $25 when it's done
- It has multiplayer and Steam Workshop support for maps
- It still doesn't have Xen

Not sure how I feel about this yet.
