Look, the state of South Dakota says you should multiply and divide from left to right. I'm sure there are plenty of math doctorates whose input goes into this curriculum.

It looks like Virginia does too. All you have to do is search for "order of operations site:.gov"

Also, the NSA https://www.nsa.gov/academia/_files/collected_learning/elementary/patterns/order_operation.pdf. They use an example 18 ÷ 3 x 2

It might just be that I don't browse a lot of servers these days, but it seemed to be that back then there were a lot more populated servers dedicated to building things.

Not.. really.. Exponents clearly occur before multiplication in the order of operations.
Umm, maybe you should reread the post I was quoting. His professor was implying that x(y) was something other than x*(y), aka not multiplication. This is not correct.

asked my calculus prof
he said 2.

i asked why and he said because how the way "2(9+3)" is written. its implicit. its implying that 2 is already part of that 9+3. he said if the multiplication sign would be added in like "2*(9+3)" then the answer would be 288. thats his take on it.
By that logic -(7)2 = 49 because - is already part of 7. In fact, it is exactly the opposite; the parentheses clarify that the - is not part of the 7.

note that this is one ranch that supports the company out of tons of ranches. the company does not force the ranch to treat their animals badly. it's not the company's fault.
I feel like this is a really important point that people are missing. Don't blame the cheese supplier, blame the ranch.

In parsers, sure. In mathematics itself, not really. The / sign does not inherently limit itself to including only the following token from being considered 'under' it. This is why in actual mathematics we use fractions with a horizontal bar to represent things, / was just created with convenience for computer use.
The / might not be limited to only the immediately following token, but that is the most reasonable assumption.

Just because it's 'widely used' doesn't mean it's the single correct way to do it. By convention, more humans urinate sitting down than standing up. Does that mean that pissing standing up is an incorrect way to piss?
No, but it means that if you had only the information that someone was urinating and you had to evaluate whether or not they were sitting or standing, the correct assumption is that they were sitting.

Then you should know that they're not programmed that way because of convention, they're programmed that way because right-to-left parsing of equations requires much more computational power.
Yeah, and as a result there is now a convention of left-to-right.

Our "machines" do it because that's how a parser works.
Yeah, I know how they work. Replace "all of our machines" with "most dedicated math solving software/hardware."
