Off Topic / My TV just freaked me the forget out
« on: May 23, 2010, 03:08:37 AM »
Currently 2:16am

I'm sitting on my bed, everyone's asleep, and I'm surfing the net with my tv on but muted. Out of the corner of my eye, I see numbers on the screen like the channel is being changed. I look at the remote right in front of me. Multiple 6's were put in, but my channels don't go very high, so it went to channel 66. Channel 66 doesn't exist, so it just sat there on the "no signal" screen. I changed it back to 58, and nothing has happened since.

I live near the interstate and interference from trucker's cb radios mess with stuff like that, but it never effected TVs and hasn't really effected anything recently.

What the forget happened?

Edit: The remote was next to my phone. Could that have any correlation?

Off Topic / Joseph Kittinger - Skydive from Space
« on: May 16, 2010, 02:08:53 AM »

On August 16, 1960, equipped with a pressurized suit, Joseph Kittinger rode a helium balloon to a height of 102,800 feet and jumped.

After two jumps from 76,400 feet and 74,700 feet, he made him final jump and was in free fall for four minutes and 36 seconds. He reached 614 mph (988 km/h or 274 m/s)...  9/10 the speed of sound.

To get an idea of the height, the temperature where he jumped was minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 70 degrees Celsius). He jumped from nearly twenty miles up and opened his parachute at 18,000 feet. Most skydivers jump from around 10,000 feet. The air was so thin that he had no sensation of falling. He had to look back at the receding balloon to tell he was descending.

This is a photo taken from approximately 100,000 feet.

While it's technically not "space", the sky is totally black and there's almost no air.

Lastly, here is the video taken from his jump. It's definitely worth watching

Woah, these really do happen. The two people arguing have a combined IQ of 35. Unfortunately, I know them both. Anyway, it's a good read.

You've got to be kidding me. I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It's just common sense.

Off Topic / From accent envy to accent remorse
« on: May 08, 2010, 01:45:40 PM »
I recently heard a friend of mine doing a perfect Scottish accent. I was jealous. Two days ago, I looked at a few Youtube videos explaining the accentuations and vowels...  basic stuff. I ended up practicing for a cumulative total of about four hours that day (I drive a lot). When it came time to drop the accent, I couldn't. It took a good twenty minutes of talking to fully drop it. Now I still find myself letting it back out without realizing it...  especially when I'm tired. Sometimes I can't even find the original pronunciation of a word without breaking it down into its basic parts and thinking hard about it.

I've screwed myself up. People are starting to notice and think I'm doing it to be "cute." This is the first time I've practiced an accent and I honestly didn't know something like this would happen.

Creativity / My band's first recorded sample
« on: April 30, 2010, 01:16:41 AM »
A few things to note about this song:

-This is an acoustic version of an electric song. The song is meant to be electric...  I had to record it acoustic for the grade though.
-This is only myself and the other guitarist.
-It sounds much better with drums.
-This is only the first 1:15 of a five minute progressive song.
-I recorded it myself in my college's brown townogue studio using an eight track ADAT.
-I used direct input for the guitars, so it's not as clean as the naked ear would hear it.
-The keys were totally last minute as I needed a fourth track to make this eligible for my final exam grade.

We will have full (electric) songs recorded in the next month or so, so if you're interested, add us and stay updated. We currently have a female soprano vocalist and are planning mostly ambient vocals...  possibly male vocals underlying... clean and screaming. As I said, this is a VERY small demo and was actually intended for my final project in recording class. However, it is still original material.

Off Topic / Country Music
« on: April 22, 2010, 07:39:36 AM »
The more time that goes by, the more I fail to understand its popularity. Most of the generalizations about it measure up. It's all pretty depressing, If it's not depressing, they literally sing about tractors or drinking, It all abuses the southern accent, They really do use "honky tonk" as actual lyrics in many songs, and they can't lay off the damn steel guitar to save their lives.

I listened to it until I was 12 or 13 simply because I accepted what my family listened to. I had not been exposed to better things. I will show my country listening friends an array of amazing songs of varying genres in attempt to show them something other than Keith Urban or Kenny Chesney, but they would honestly rather buddy up with the rest of their flannel wearing brethren and sing off-key to a song about "loving in the sticks."
