I had an idea about a BLF furcon or something in the US where we could all meet.

Seems like a horrible idea, all of us at the same place.
I'm still looking for roommates for MFF
Also furry migration but i don't think anyone here is from minnesota (besides surburb but he said he can't cuz school) and it's (IMO) still too small to travel far for)

Off Topic / Re: Your view on teachers taking cell phones if caught?
« on: August 04, 2015, 11:32:17 PM »
In high school or middle school (or elementary school if those kids get loving phones) no. Kids don't have important stuff, they just want to forget around and text.

But in college where people have like kids and jobs and stuff, and are actually serious when they say they need their phone for serious things, then yeah. My college recognized that, and everyone was good at turning it to silent/vibrate and leaving the room if they have to take a call. I did have one crazy teacher who absolutely insisted "No, nothing bad will ever happen to you that you'll need a phone for, you shouldn't even bring your phone into this building"
She was a pretty bad teacher in general. She spend half of each class day talking to us about her chickens and home farm thing and complaining how her neighbors don't like it. I remember her saying she specifically asked for the class to be scheduled on Friday mornings (my school very seldom scheduled Friday classes) specifically so people had to wake up at a time they weren't used to. She said she wanted it to be Saturday but they wouldn't give her that.

I said recognise, not identify.
Ok, and?
Many of these services are just as unrecognizable as they are unidentifiable.

low level OS stuff, hardware, networking stuff
"Group Policy Client" "IKE and AuthIP IPSec Keying Modules" "Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN"

There's plenty of people who can use a PC competently and not stupid install stuff on it, yet have absolutely no clue what these things are

2661
they're not random letters at all, for one thing, services are generally pretty straightforwardly named
Right, they're acronyms/abbreviations. But to a user who doesn't know what the acronym/abbreviation stands for, "lltdsvc" or "ktmrm" may as well be random letters.

but if you've been using your computer for any longer than a month and can't recognise what services should and should be running, there is an issue
Then go through your entire service list and say what each one is, without Googling any, because you can't.
We're not talking about installed programs here. Yes, that you should be able to go through and recognize most installed things, because you should know everything you've installed. Too many people just install things without reading what they're doing and get bogged down with toolbars and other various junk software.
But services are different. They're often a core part of the software they were installed with, yet there's no indication of what software installed it. A ton come bundled as part of windows (not all of which are even enabled), and a lot of them aren't even clearly named. And a lot of them are things you can't expect people to know: low level OS stuff, hardware, networking stuff, etc. It's not just as simple as "You installed this, you should know what it is" like it is with installed programs

To be fair, there is a user-friendly name for the services as well.
Not all of them have one
"WebClient" is a default windows service. It comes with the lovely description of "WebClient." The name kind of says what it is, but there's still a lot of ambiguity as to what exactly it does.
And even the ones that do have a name don't mean much in many cases. "Group Policy Client" doesn't mean much to someone who's not familiar with Windows Server. "IKE and AuthIP IPSec Keying Modules" doesn't mean much to someone not familiar with authentication protocols. "Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN" doesn't mean much to someone not familiar with .NET development

Having someone know exactly what every service is is just not going to happen

Did you quote the wrong person or something?
Not at all
Your claim (or at least implied claim) that 'people don't know what they're doing if they have/can't recognize incomprehensibly named services' is false because tons of entirely legit services are named incomprehensibly

2663

Do you even know what services are?
A lot of them just have acronyms for names because it's not something people commonly look through
'gpsvc' 'bdesvc' 'uxsms' 'msdtc' 'ikeext' 'iccs' 'iphlpsvc' 'lltdsvc' are just a few of the "random letter" looking services I found, only going a quarter of the way through my service list, and they're all entirely legit if you want to google them

Modification Help / Re: onConnectRequest conflicting client mods
« on: August 04, 2015, 09:33:49 AM »
Amazing, adapted it to missionstartphase3ack, to just stop them from loading in without a disconnect.
Wait, what?
There must be some drawback that you (and I) aren't seeing with this method. Because preventing someone from joining without a disconnect message was the whole point of dealing with the problems of using onConnectRequest. If there was a better alternative, someone would had to have found it by now

Off Topic / Re: How dangerous is it to disable PSU fan?
« on: August 03, 2015, 08:17:24 PM »
Most PC savvy people(to the point of taking apart a power supply by yourself at 16) aren't exactly going to be the most fit humans out there.
I don't think "PC Savvy" is what I'd call someone who has to ask if it's a bad idea to stick a screw in a fan

On topic, please.
There's nothing more to say on topic. Your question has been answered. Don't do it. Take it outside.

Things have fans for a reason.
Disabling them could cause it to overheat.

Also, blocking the fan with a screw can cause the fan itself to burn out and break.

Solution:
Clean it outside

Huh? What would you use a numpad for
There's just a few hotkeys that you set to whatever you want
