1x12 + 1x2, works for me, and isn't that bad looking. You could also try 1x10 + 1x4 and 1x8 + 1x6. I try not to use any custom bricks.

Currently each spell is its own item, as you can see in the screenshots in the OP. When you hold them an emitter appears around your hand to show you have a spell equipped.

When we were testing yesterday other player-types could use them. This was before the mana playertype was introduced, but I still think they work without mana.
They are however balanced with mana, since the stone primary attack is way stronger than the fire primary attack, it would be unbalanced if they didn't have mana restrictions.
