Drama / Is Blockland dying?
« on: July 15, 2013, 08:41:29 PM »
So as many forum goer's will hopefully agree, Blockland has had quite an influence on my life and is one game I'll never regret purchasing for the first time.  But lately I've noticed unnerving things about my favorite childhood game.

-Lately development has been little to nothing, almost three months with nothing but bug fixes and patches, and two months since even one of those.  No insight on anything upcoming.

-Sales, excluding the past 6 months, I'd seen Blockland on sale maybe once or twice, we've had like 3 75% off's in the past 6 months, are we accepting that maybe the game isn't worth a $20 price point in the public eyes?

-User base and popularity, I mean I know to us, seeing 5,000 people join within a year is amazing, but in reality it's not anywhere near large in the gaming community, we're just constantly regarded as a Minecraft or ROBLOX clone

-Community, recently the community has caused tons of uproar, being from hacking the game to just causing chaos.  Not to mention the downgraded forums server, and lack of communication from any of the dev's.

-Lack of acknowledgement, we haven't been greenlit, or even covered by any other than one YouTube indie gamer, and that wasn't even a good review, he basically said the game isn't worth the price

-This point is personal to me, but many of my peers agree with me, Blockland is losing its replay value in my eyes, I want the old nostalgic Blockland back, where everything was new and there was a thousand ways to waste your time.

I know not everyone agrees with me but in all honesty I can't see Blockland surviving too many more years.

How do you guys feel?

Off Topic / My apologies to the community [Rant?]
« on: July 14, 2013, 06:52:05 PM »
Alright I guess it's about time for this.

I'm sure most of the people here know me from my past or from this account.  I've had plenty of previous accounts here on the forums; colonial killer, [JazZ], Fission, Yola, Yenola, etc).  These have all been banned (excluding this one) for their own reasons whether I agree with them or not.

I know I have a reputation of being a troll or an starfish here, and honestly, I'm ready to try to rebuild my reputation here.  I understand not everyone here is willing to forgive or forget what I've done, but I'm asking you to let me prove that I can act in a different manner.  I've been a part of this community on and off for the past four years, and I honestly don't know where I'd be without some of you guys who've had an impact on my life.  I guess now is my time to start giving back to you all.

I'm sorry if any posts here on out are in any way condescending or just being an starfish, that's not my intentions in any way.  I also apologize for my past mistakes and hope that we can move on.

Off Topic / My boss made me an offer yesterday
« on: July 14, 2013, 01:52:09 PM »
So recently I've been attending a career center for my high school diploma, doing online classes for my bachelor degree and computer certifications.  I've been doing all this because I want to go into the computer based fields, and I work at a local computer store.  I've worked there probably a year and a half now and I've mostly decided I want to own one of the three shops as a career, and maybe expand that.  The only problem being buying part of a business isn't cheap at all, and working as manager making $17.25/hr isn't nearly enough to afford that after 5 years of actively saving every penny.

Me and my boss have become really close over the year and a half, he's a really cool guy and we usually just chat about the computer world whenever we're in the shop together.  Well yesterday he stopped me and we went to his office and whatnot, I thought I was in trouble but he actually made an offer that after I finish all my schooling he'd be willing to hand over one of the shops to me for a year and see how I manage, and if he finds it to be adequate, after the year he'll give me a price and I can either accept it and pay it off as I can or I can continue as a manager there.

Not really sure what to say about it, I don't have a degree in business or anything so I'm not entirely sure what I'll do

What do you guys think I should do?

Modification Help / How do I get the client from a GUI?
« on: July 04, 2013, 05:47:43 PM »
Alright so I haven't messed with client->server/server->client GUI's since now and I have to admit it's loving with my mind quite a bit.

So I have a simple GUI, text box and button.

I want the server to messageAll what is inside the text box along with the client who sent its name

I know how to get the value of the text box, but I have no idea how to get the clients name from the buttonpush function.

Modification Help / MRPG - Medieval RPG - Need Help! [hiatus]
« on: July 03, 2013, 06:52:22 PM »

Information:
Okay, so recently I've decided to work on a medieval rpg mod for Blockland.  I want this to be independent from its predescesors.  No 24/7 grinding, and attention grabbing gameplay.  This isn't going to be an easy project and I don't plan on releasing it any time soon, but I will see through that this is finished.

Help Needed:
I'm going to need help as there are certain things I wish to achieve that I don't have the skills to do myself.  I'll list what I need:
-Modeler, I will need everything from weapons, to potions, to armor, to props
-Graphic Artist, I will need these for prints, signs, etc
-GUI specialist, I can create GUI's, however I have no ability to make a good looking one

Please PM me or leave a post here to discuss grabbing on of these spots.

Progress/News:
I currently have nothing done on the project except for ideas and planning but this is the order of what will be done:
-Database System - 100%
-Economy/Work System - 30%
-Resources - 10%
-Law System - 0%
-Property Ownership - 0%
-Guilds/Clans - 0%
-Details/Cleaning up - 10%

Details:
Here are some of the ideas and implementations I hope to pursue in this mod:
-Fully working economy, fluctuating prices depending on supply/demand
-Resource gathering that isn't grinding, group benefits, etc
-Fully working law system, players act as jury for criminals
-Property Ownership that allows players to build anywhere they feel, for the right price
-Good experience and good functioning/looking mod and GUI

If you have any suggestions, post here or PM me and I'll decide whether or not to add it!

That is all I have for now, I hope to update with some progress very soon!

Modification Help / Data management? [Solved]
« on: July 03, 2013, 04:58:03 PM »
Alright, I plan on working on a mod that is going to require a forget ton of client variables, and it needs to save and load them when the client leaves/joins.

I'm used to writing text files and reading them, but this is a very inefficient way of doing it, I've head something about script objects and what not.

Can someone go in depth with a good database system?

Alright this is a somewhat long story so bear with me if you want.

I was with a 5 other friends (all above 15 years old) in a neighborhood park yesterday night.  It was 11:23pm something, and a sheriff walks up, he shines his light and tells us not to run and whatever.  He gets to us and tells us "what are you guys doing, curfew is 10pm", at the time me and another friend noticed he had no cruiser with him.  He then tells us he needs our parents information and what not, so one by one we all give our information, he THEN tells us we'll be receiving a citation to appear in court in the mail.  Then he tells us all to leave.

Now for some more details, we were all extremely respectful, using sir no sir etc, and he constantly disrespected us.  That enough had me almost to the point of exploding in his face.  But I didn't because he's an authority.

He also on later views showed no sign of authority, gave no name, had no cruiser.

Now for the next day

So we all get home, tell our parents, most of them got grounded as well.  Then me and my closer friend start looking up if this was legit or not.  We then find out where we were at is Columbus jurisdiction, which means curfew is midnight for anyone under 17.  This means we were in fact not breaking the law.

So we flip stuff and start calling the sheriff's department, asking to find out what's going on who stopped us what happened etc.  They tell (Columbus Police) tell us that they have no officer under the name of what my friend read from his nametag.  We then call the neighboring counties sheriff department.  They have the same guy under the same name, so they tell me "talk to him yourself".

I get on the phone with this guy, he's the same disrespectful forget I remember, and now he's telling me he never stopped us.  He was at a drug bust in Cbrown town Winchester (where we were stopped), at 11:45.

Naturally I think "well if that was 11:45, you were done with us by 11:25, you could've easily made it there in time", but he basically calls me a liar that I never got stopped and to call his sergeant tomorrow.

This is what I take from this and what I'm going to do.

He parked his cruiser far away because he knew he was in the wrong jurisdiction, he wanted to scare us off so that we wouldn't cause problems so he told us we were breaking the law, he never reported it to his dispatcher's because we weren't in fact breaking the law.  He then get's a call from one of us and decides he's just going to lie about it so he doesn't seem like a fool.

What I'm going to do?  I'm going to gather the other 5 kids, walk into his office, and ask them who stopped us.  6 of our words is greater than one of his, and I'm not gonna let this douche bag get away with being a disrespectful forget just because we're minors.

So blf, what bad/good police encounters have you had?

Modification Help / Correct way to /animate/ .dts models for gamemode
« on: June 22, 2013, 01:54:04 PM »
Alright, so I've been thinking about doing a little script to waste some of my free time and I need to know if I'm approaching this the right way.

I need a plant to 'grow', and the plant is a .dts model, so do I just delete the last stage and replace a different model in the same xyz coordinates or is there any way to do it without requiring 5+ models per plant

General Discussion / Better development communication
« on: June 06, 2013, 09:35:04 PM »
I know there are plenty of topics relating to what could or should be done to get Blockland more well known in the gaming community, but I haven't seen this one suggested yet and it's a pretty large thing to me and many other avid gamers.

If you look at any major indie games, eg. Minecraft, they have near constant development news and communication with their customers.  When Blockland switched from versions to revisions, meaning more frequent updates, that was a very needed and well done step taken towards this, but we can still go a month or two with no word on the development of the game.  This literally means that no work could be made for weeks and we would never know, not that I'm saying Eric is obligated to work on this game every second of his life, but I think to get a game on Greenlight or the such, you would need an active development team or leader.

Badspot does indeed have a Twitter account, which is rarely used, but I think if just simple updates to what he was currently working on or what he plans on working on in the near future would prove to any company interested in selling Blockland on their client, that we have an active and resourceful developer.

That's just my thoughts, and it would be nice to see some change in this aspect.
