What is it?
War Thunder is an online MMO game about...well war. It's set in the period from world war 1 till the korean war (so there are jets). It's in an early stage right now, so all there is are planes and tanks. But that didn't stop me logging 100+ hours into this masterpiece of a game, and it's free! (FREE!!!!!!!!!!) You also need to research planes from points you get in game. This can be done faster by buying a premium account or golden eagles (optional).
The game is out for Windows, Mac and PS4

What are the specifications on this?
I can tell you right now this game requires almost nothing to run at low, I could run it at a steady 15fps on a single core 2gb of ram computer with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 pro card (old right?)

Although be warned, this game does get a lot of updates and requires a 9GB install on steam and 2gb more update once you do a first time launch of it, depending on what's been released it will usually be between 1-3gbs

PLANES


Fighters / Fighter Bombers
Different nations have different types of fighters but they're all used for one thing - shooting down other planes. They are fast and maneuverable, and can wield explosive armaments later in the line. They are however, light in most cases and can be shot down quickly by heavier fighters, they are also not good at operating at high altitudes.


Heavy Fighters / Attack Aircraft
These are like fighters but heavier, and like bombers but lighter. These can pack a punch and have more than one gun, so watch yourself when you get on the tails of these things. They can carry a lot more explosives than fighters and are pretty fast, they can't turn as well but can out turn a bomber, so don't try turn fighting or maneuvering with these like you do in fighters for you'll be outmatched by a fighter.


Bombers
They are just as you expect, they drop explosives and win the entire game. These are not fighters but get on the tail of a well trained B-25 and you're toast. They are not fast, operate at high altitudes, can't turn and basically if there's a fighter on the prowl you are in trouble. They have a ton of explosives and bombing rewards you with a lot of points. If you want to be a bomber, go down the american line.


Jets
These are different, they are boom and zoom which means you shoot at someone then fly off at high speeds. These things are fast and can climb like there's no tomorrow, all of them can operate at high altitudes and they pack a serious punch. You better be good once you get to this line because there will be other jets against you and cost a ton to repair.

So what nations are there?
There are 5 main nations, planes from others are in other trees (French, Australian and Canadian planes are in the British tree). Each nation has it's own trait.


USA (AMERICA)
American Aircraft are characterized as heavily armed, heavily armored energy fighters, with their bombers distinctive for their heavy bomb loads and durability. They excel in the use of boom and zoom tactics, as most of their planes lack maneuverability but excel in firepower, being mostly armed with six .50 caliber machine guns with high ammunition capacity. American aircraft are mostly known for their bombers, as they carry large payloads with heavy bombs.


USSR (RUSSIA)
Soviet Aircraft in War Thunder usually have machine guns with a high rate of fire (SIDENOTE: YAK'S ARE THE BANE OF EVERYONE) and quite low ammunition capacity, which can scare numerous people away from using the Russian line, or come equipped with a small number of large-caliber cannons. Soviet planes are often known as being 'jack of all trades, but master of none.' This means that they are all rounder planes, good at everything but great at nothing. Russian fighters can become very successful if the pilot exploits his enemies weakness, and uses it against him.


GERMANY
German Aircraft are wonderful aircraft for Boom and Zoom (BnZ) tactics, due to their generally good climb rate and excellent energy retention. The most notable aircraft on the German tree are the Bf-109 and Fw-190, both of which have a host of variants. German planes are often hard to master, but can be used very effectively once the pilot is accustomed to the aircraft.German bombers have an average bomb load, papery Armour and the defensive weaponry is not to be relied upon. German heavy fighters can take a modest amount of punishment however they tend to catch fire very easily, they also excel at head on engagements due to their overwhelming armament.  


UK (GREAT BRITAIN)
There are many different styles of fighter in the British tree, from turnfighters, such as the Spitfires and Hurricanes, and energy fighters, such as the Hawker Typhoon and Tempest. Up until tier 3, most of the British fighters lack a large armament, and make do with 7.7mm Brownings. Once tier 3 is reached, however, every British fighter will have at least 2x 20mm cannons. British fighters are a mix of boom and zoom, speed, turning and energy.


JAPAN
Japanese aircraft in War Thunder are often regarded as the most agile aircraft. Aircraft such as the Ki-43 and A6M Zeros possess the quickest turn time of the fighters in War Thunder, often allowing to Japanese fighters to win turn-fight engagements. This trait is found (at least, to an extent) in all Japanese aircraft. This does however come at a price, as Japanese aircraft are very fragile, and lack self sealing fuel tanks, meaning that if set on fire, it's rare they will be able to survive it. Due to their historical role, many Japanese fighters are carrier aircraft.

TANKS

Note: There are multiple playstyles for tanks, and they differentiate a lot more than planes do.

Light tanks

Light tanks are generally early war/low tier vehicles because of the fact that medium and heavy tanks were impractical at the time. Later in the war, light tanks were less practical as hostile armor outgunned them heavily. Don't be fooled, most of them don't drive that much faster than their medium counterparts, because their size and weight was a matter of budget, not speed.

Medium tanks

Medium tanks are the classics-- modern MBTs are based off of them. This category includes some well known tanks like the T-34, Panzer 4, and M4 Sherman. These are multipurpose vehicles that can support infantry while carrying significant tank fighting capability and mobility. They're usually capable of punching above their weight by flanking an enemy heavy tank, although don't expect it to be a one hit kill.

Heavy tanks

Heavy tanks. If you want something that can break through the wall of a stalemate or atleast survive more than a handful of hits from an enemy tank, you get a heavy tank. Unfortunately, they're slow and expensive. This means they're bad for infantry support- hence why modern tanks (MBTs) lean towards the medium genre. However, they have the best armor and the best armament. If you can get one of these in a position where its frontal armor is well angled, or if you can get the tank hull-down entirely, it will pay its bills and then some.

Tank destroyers

Tank destroyers are the cheap alternative to buying a whole tank, in most cases. This is usually because they have a simple (albeit limiting) design factor of mounting the gun in the hull, instead of a turret. The gun can still traverse independent of the hull, but only by a certain amount, usually around 8-15 degrees. Otherwise the cost is lowered by simply not giving the tank much armor (which means repairs are cheaper and the engine doesn't have to be as powerful). They are the snipers of the tank world, and they'll generally beat a light or medium tank in a head-on engagement because of their thick hull armor in non-turreted tank destroyers. They are defeated almost entirely, however, if you can flank them. Their guns are usually in between the armament of a medium and a heavy tank.

USA (AMERICA)

Recently added, there's not a lot of knowledge on how these things perform. One thing's for certain, atleast: The Shermans are good, and the Lee is great.
The large majority of their tech tree is Shermans, because historically the Germans had very small amounts of tigers and panthers relative to the Shermans and the Shermans could beat panzer 3s and panzer 4s in equal engagements. As for the Tiger II and the Panther II... Under 500 Tiger IIs were built, and the Panther II didn't really see combat. America didn't want to sacrifice the superior infantry support that the Shermans offered, but the Tiger IIs forced their hand and the long-delayed M26 Pershing's development was completed. Originally considered a heavy tank it's been since reclassified as a medium tank, historically.

USSR (RUSSIA)

They're generally simple but effective in playstyle-- much like their design schemes. Some tanks like the T-50 have surprising armor combined with a surprising gun. Others, like the KV-2... well..
Anyway, Russia's early KV tanks were like Germany's tigers, in that for a while the opposing side didn't really have the firepower to easily take one out. But everyone loves to forget the KV tanks in favour of the T-34s. Soviet Russia's T-34s are like America's M4 shermans in that they had a lot of them, and a lot of variants for them. The one everyone generally loves is the T-34-85 thanks to its large gun and well armored turret. They also get the IS tanks... in retrospect, humorously and well named. IS means Iosif Stalin-- Joseph Stalin. Yes, they named them after their leader. Don't judge- they're actually quite good and they had a somewhat new form of armor sloping in the front, aftly named the pike nose.

GERMANY

Early-mid tier German mediums are like glass cannons because of their excellent guns and their terrible ammo storage. (Shoot at the machinegun port on the hull of a PzKpfw IV Ausf. F2 and you'll probably accidentally hit the ammo rack behind the machinegunner.) The Tiger series' armor serves it well provided the user knows how to angle their tank and keep a distance from anything that could flank it. Historically, tigers would hide in bushes or treelines, waiting for an enemy tank column to ambush and destroy. This tactic had a tendency to work well, because even when the Tiger was found the column usually wasn't full of tanks that had a chance of beating a tiger in a one on one engagement anyway.

Armor angling

By angling your armor, the effective thickness of your armor greatly exceeds its nominal thickness.

Nominal thickness = the thickness of your armor relative to a flat impact angle, or just how thick the plate of armor is.
Effective thickness = the thickness of your armor relative to an impact angle.

Hull down

Hull down is a position where your tank's hull is hidden behind something while your turret (and its gun) are still higher than the object hiding your hull. This is excellent for tanks with strong turrets, usually heavies.

Help / Possible fix for the "Avatar was too big to upload" error.

When some people upload avatars, they get this error;

All hope is lost, right? Make it smaller even though you've made it as small as you possibly could? Nope, it's the complete opposite.

Step 1 (I'm using gimp for this so you might as well just install it because I haven't done this on Paint.net or anything):
Open your avatar that isn't working


Step 2:
Export as PNG by going to file and export, make sure it's png so this pops up:


Step 3:
The thing we're focussing on is the Compression level slider.

Slide it down to zero.

It should work, it's what I've done to fix my issues.
I wasn't sure where to put this but I wanted to help people.
