minor spoilers
I screwed up the main quest line and thought I lost an achievement. I went to Rivet City before going to GNR and found someone who knows my father. After I talked to the doctor it said, "Completed: Following in his Footsteps." It didn't give me the achievement for the quest though. forget. I went and found GNR and got the achievement after talking to Three Dog though, but it forgeted up my quest order again D;
You can beat the main quest line pretty fast. When you first exit Vault 101 you can catch your dad walking in the Wastelands and skip every quest involving finding him.
