I don't really understand how it could be designed to not be able to block doorways.
Do you mean the ground-planted shield?
when you are in the planting animation, the shield is yellow when it can be placed, and it becomes red and cant be placed when it is an obstruction and blocks paths.
probably cant be done, but it would be a cool feature.
