i feel like this place could have been so much better if even something as small as the "no flaming" rule had been enforced all the time. People got away with blatantly and unnecessarily insulting each other all the time. If memory serves I think people only got banned when they really crossed the line, but huge jerks almost never were and toxicity became the "cool" norm.badspot contributed to the negativity and actively bullied people himself. actually didn't he like just get in an argument with someone last week lol
I'm sure badspot banned tons and tons of people who deserved it over the years, and I kind of feel sorry for him having to navigate the issue of having a growing community of children/teens/adults all mixed together during a time when indie games were unheard of. I don't think he or anyone else saw the issues that plagued this place coming. However, eventually they became plain to see, and unfortunately nothing was changed to make improvements

We all act in self-interest to some degree, it's human nature. What Unova did may be self centered, but so is expecting strangers to pander to you via respecting your trauma surrounding a word. Have you considered growing a pair?community is also human nature - expecting others to "pander"? Hmm, I assume you think tossing the n word around is cool too
i called my best friend a friend alongside other colorful language (rainbow person, flag people, gaylord) in obviously joking banter between two people who've known each other for ages in a friend group vc he owns last week (i like men and have had boyfriends known to most of the people there) and the turboqueer of the server who had been invited by a friend of a friend proceeded to post a clip of me doing it across 5 different servers' vent channels saying that people are being homophobic to their friends and in their own server used me as an example of some pridefall nonsense because i had posted about having used 4chan in the past, and now it's a consistent joke in that friend group to make jokes about me being extremely homophobic? this behaviour is super immature and extremely out-of-pocket. the way you framed it is hilariously unaware tho

This topic is so strange- I don't think I've ever stopped to really think about how insane this community was and how poorly it was moderated. Colton, I appreciate you bringing it to life and giving us a place to really express our thoughts. (And I hope you're doing so well!!)mental illness gets the best of me BUT im doing well el oh el!! just moved ^o^
There's not too much to say that hasn't already been said. I have definitely always envied Badspot as he was like our tribal leader or something. He was THE guy that you wanted to impress. I remember going through his liked videos on his old youtube channel and being so excited to see him like one of my videos. I'm sure a lot of us have memories of specifically going to his most recent posts to see what kind of bombs he was dropping on people. You kind of just jumped on this weird bandwagon of saying "yiff in hell" and being a richard at all times, and I don't think I've ever truly even thought about that until right now.
I was super lucky enough to have never seen or experienced the "grooming" aspect of the forums. Maybe I was just super naive to it all. Hearing all of your stories is incredibly eye-opening and I hope if you were affected, you can find the help you need.
I'm incredibly thankful for this community; I created so many lasting friendships and discovered an entire career path that I still love to this day. Though the way this topic has gone is a reminder of the toxicity- it's really cool to see old users return and see how much we've all matured.
