I have a practical reason I decided to begin learning Japanese. My school only offers English Sign Language, French, Spanish, and Japanese as language courses. I have no interest in flailing my arms around like an autist all day, and I absolutely despise Spanish and French. I've hated Spanish with a passion for as long as I can remember, in like 3rd grade we had a mandatory Spanish class and it was the first class I ever fell asleep in. French just sounds like a drunk person with a cold speaking Spanish. So, I decided to take Japanese via process of elimination. No weabooness involved.i think spanish is pretty useful, but there's probably not much demand for it because lots of english people already know spanish as well.
