Off Topic / If you were to die tomorrow...
« on: February 07, 2010, 12:09:17 PM »
Given that you know in advance: what would you regret, and how would you feel about it?  Also, what would one thing be that you wish you did?

Personally, I wouldn't regret anything because I would be dead shortly, and I would feel relieved.  I would, however, wish that I took more risks.

Yes, morbid topic.

Help / Authentication Fail

So my Auth failed, and I would like some details on what exactly that means.  Now when I re-auth or whenever it authenticates when I open Blockland, it takes a few minutes.

Not sure how many people know about this, but I found it by randomly clicking wiki links.

It's a 1000-year-long song: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longplayer

Link to feed: http://longplayer.org/

And if you're getting some weird codec error:
Quote
I had this same problem trying to play mp3's on a fresh install of Vista.
"Microsoft MPEG-1 (50)" missing error and had hopeless redirection from WMP codec servers. Here's what you need to do if you get this problem;

firstly, don't use Windows media player.

Install the free AC3 Filter 1.45b

2,744 KB
nicely bundled audio filters and codecs ... FUN!

Sourceforge & mirrors

And secondly, use a decent media player please:

off the top of my head, here are three ...

VLC (highly recommend this one for all media)
Video Lan.org free download

Winamp (Still going strong)
Winamp.com free download

or even
iTunes (if you like that sort of thing)
iTunes 7.something

Rock on and enjoy my son, crank it to 11, because your eardrums wont last forever

It sounds weird, but I think it's cool.

And no, this is not the Backwards Music Station.

Edit:
I think it starts you at the beginning when you use the feed, so have fun catching up for 10 years :p

Off Topic / Why Does Death Make Us Sad?
« on: January 18, 2010, 12:37:02 PM »
I've been thinking about this recently, and it's the sole reason why I can't focus on an essay right now.

1:  Why does death make people sad?
I've come to the conclusion that we are sad when someone dies because he/she was significant to us in some way.  Family, friends, etc.  However, if we mourn people's deaths because they were important to us, it is because we will never enjoy their company again, not because they died.  If someone went to live in isolation for the rest of their life, they would be "dead to us".  We would never enjoy their company again.  If, when someone died, we could continue to communicate with them, death wouldn't be anything worth mourning.

2:  With that point made, why is it such a big deal when someone who we didn't know dies? (hear me out here, I may sound extremely insensitive).
Take, for the best current example, the Haitian disaster.  Yes, it is terrible that those people died, since life is the only thing we have; it is everything we have.  Yet people can become very defensive when I tell them that while the death of those people is bad, I do not feel any emotion for the deceased.  Once someone is dead, they are dead, and that's the end of it.  If, according to my first point, we only feel sad about someone's death because they were important to us, why would we feel sad/concerned about the death of someone who was not important to us?

My second point wasn't really a point, but an open question that I would appreciate feedback on.
My only answer to #2 is that we are raised like that.  When 9-11 happened, I was in 3rd grade.  Were that to happen now, I wouldn't be sad/upset/concerned for the deaths of those people, but I would feel sad/upset/concerned because it was a strike to my country (which has meaning to me).  However, when it happened, I cried and was sad because that's how everyone else was.  It was proper etiquette, if you will.  So what I believe is that we are raised to be sensitive towards human life, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does us no good, either.

Feedback?

(tl;dr - forget you)

Off Topic / Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter
« on: January 08, 2010, 05:51:12 PM »
Before I cough up the money to buy one (although I do hope to find a deal on ebay), I have a couple of questions about the device that hopefully some of you guys can answer:

1)  How fast is fast?  I've heard that the connection is great, but I'll be on the second floor of my house, with the wireless signal below me on the 1st floor.

2)  N or G?  My router's box says "Works with wireless G, great with wireless N".  This is a little vague as far as determining which type to use, so I'd like some of your interpretations.

Thanks

Off Topic / New Year's - Opinions
« on: January 01, 2010, 10:09:59 AM »
IMO, New Year's celebrations are kind of stupid.

A year passed, and so what?  If you decided to make your start of a new year June, your "new year" would have been a few months ago.  To me, it really has no great significance other than parties.

Also: the Times Square ball drop is something I find to be stupid.  According to Fox, the tradition started because they didn't want to set off fireworks in the city, so they dropped a ball.
But really?  You go to New York, which can be an international trip for many, and cram in with another million or so people, and most of the time you're there all day, just to see a ball drop?

Now I could see it as interesting if the ball was engineered to start at the top of the pole on Jan 1st and slowly drop by the force of gravity so it hits the bottom exactly at 11:59:59 on Dec 31st, but that's not the case.  It's just some guy pressing a button.

That's just my opinion on New Year's, yours?

I'm currently not in a position where I can edit my avatar for the new year, so I am asking if any of you would edit mine to say "Happy New Year" or something as the rocket 'splodes.  Just right click and save the image.

kthx.

Edit:
and it still needs to be animated.

Off Topic / 60GB or 120GB?
« on: December 06, 2009, 11:12:12 AM »
So I've decided on an xbox 360 (if you saw my topic on that) because more of my friends have one so I can play online with them.

Only one question though:
My mom is making a deal with me.  She'll either get me the 60GB with the wireless adapter, or the 120GB and I buy the adapter myself.

So is there any real advantage that the 120 holds over the 60?  Most of my friends tell me they've hardly used more that 20GB on their drives.

Gallery / WIP - Medieval Town/RP [Today's newsfeed post is added]
« on: November 29, 2009, 11:04:28 PM »
Something I've been working on a bit for the past week or so.  I wasn't really doing much on it, but I've decided to go ahead with the project.

It will/does utilize:
  • VCE v5 (which includes saving progress)
  • Amade's bot events
  • Possibly Rot's Zombies (Mainly for Ai packs to use in fighting areas)
  • Some type of discernible storyline
  • Gold as currency, an EXP system of some sort, and an "outlaw" system(outlaws of a certain level cannot enter towns, but they have their own town).
  • The ability to be knighted
  • Quests.  Repeatable and storyline.
  • Measures taken to keep players from buying weapons just to mindlessly kill others (you can only use your weapons outside of town).
  • PvP Arena (Hopefully, this will be in the larger city).
  • Spells.  You can only learn one type of spell at a time, and only certain types of spells can be learned depending on things such as your outlaw level and exp.
  • Weapons.  Certain weapons, like spells, can only be bought depending on your outlaw level (or lack thereof) and exp.
  • Dungeons with rewards at the end.  Most likely repeatable.
  • Some type of subgame features that can reward you with gold and give you stuff to do when you're not questing

To name a few.
As far as the Outlaw and Knights go (the name "Outlaw" is subject to change, I'm not a fan of it), depending on which you progress in, the storyline will be different.  You can still do the same quests for the most part, but the story will be from a different POV depending on your choice.

More details on the gameplay and such later as I actually plan it out.  For now, pictures:

#1 - Spawn area.  You cannot get your weapons in this area.

#2 - Town wall.  Pass through this to enter the town.  Wooden door on the inside is some controls so I can lock people out if I choose ;D

#3 - Town overview.  Shows the guardhouse, the tavern, the marketplace, and the beginning of a spell shop.  This spell shop will only offer a few basic spells.

#4 - Tavern.  Interior is not 100%.  Here you save, load, and chill out.

#5 - Guardhouse.  Mainly a prop right now, I have plans to make it the spawn point for reinforcements when the guards are on an alert status. (ie: high-level outlaw in town)

#6 - Marketplace.  A few stands, pretty much.  The one you see fully in the picture is a potions stand which will heal you +50 HP for something like 15 gold.  The rest are currently props.  Credit to whoever made their market stands similar to mine, as I based mine off of theirs.  Can't find out who right now.

#7 - Magic shop.  In this town it only sells fire and water spells, maybe lightning spells if I decide to do so.  Please note that the smoke is coming from a chimney in the background, and not the potion bottle in the foreground.

Sorry for the low-res pics.

I still have the residential houses to add as well as a few other completely useless props.  The town will have a few guard patrols that will provide killing fun for any outlaw that manages to sneak weapons into town (yay smuggling!).

Credits to:
  • Beachbum -  Helping with some painting stuff, towers seen on the town wall.
  • Agereon - Making a 16x16 single-story townhouse that will be used in the future.

News Feed
  • February 10th(2010) - Started work on the project again at a whim.  Bot events aren't spamming the stuff out of my console thanks to the update, expect some work to get done.
  • December 5th - Got a few townhouses done.  See the first post on page 3.
  • December 4th - Got some more work done today.  Weapons shop is done, except for some events.  Most of the townhouses are completed, but I'm considering making a 32x32 size house and a two-story 16x16 that would serve as one of the residential shops/eating places.  I'm considering recruiting a few eventers to assist me in making the bot guards much more advanced, and when I get to the "alert status" part of their capabilities.

Also, I'll be testing a few things with Rot's zombies and bots.  Mainly to see if they conflict with each other in any ways, and possibly how to avoid any of the issues those conflicts may cause.

Once the starter town is completed, I'll be working on the forest, then I'll add in the outlaw town, then the city, and then I'll make quests.  There's still a lot to be done; I'd place the progress so far at about 15%, being generous.
  • November 30th continued - Got some more residential homes done today, I'll be duping them in to make the residential part of town soon.  Before I do, though, I'm hoping to get some more unique houses made as well as the weapons shop.
  • November 30th - Finished most of the shops in the first town.  Only the weapons shop left, then onto the residential area and finally the forest wall.  New pictures added, some pictures removed.
  • November 29th - Posted topic
  • November 22nd - Started Project

This is a new style of building to me, so feedback is nice.  I plan to be done before the new year, but look what happened to my FutureRPG, so no promises.

Until then, feel free to rate the progress x/10. I know it isn't much, but I just wanted to get this out there.  If you want to help, post a medieval build and I'll see if I can fit you in.

Typical Niliscro long post go!

Games / Help deciding: PS3 or 360?
« on: November 29, 2009, 01:01:55 AM »
I'm having trouble deciding which one to purchase; 360 or PS3?

I want the 360 for a few of its exclusive games and unmatched online play, but I want the PS3 for the BluRay player and also for exclusive games.

As far as graphics go, I've come to believe they're similar, but prove me wrong.
Pricewise, they're about the same.  I am going to college in less than 2 years, as well, so having the PS3-BluRay player combo would be good as something to take with me, as opposed to a 360 and a BluRay/HD-DVD player.

I've tried both consoles and am satisfied with both, so I need help deciding.  I'm currently leaning towards the PS3, as I've owned the PS and PS2 in the past, and since I might not be using the 360's online capabilities since it costs extra money.

Also:  cant he PS3 play older games (PS2 games) or do you need to buy some type of adapter?

Help / VCE Help - Saving and loading
« on: November 26, 2009, 09:58:31 AM »
For some reason saving/loading variables will not work for me.  This is what happens:
I can save variables and then load them while my server is running, but after I shut down the server and restart, the variables I saved while previously hosting do not load.  I don't know if they're supposed to do this, but I need to be able to save variables and then load them after I host at a different time.
I'm not sure if other players who come to my server and then leave/rejoin experience this, or if it's only after I shut down.

Suggestions & Requests / JVS Suggestion - 1x3x5 Doors
« on: November 22, 2009, 03:47:13 PM »
Title says most of it; JVS Doors with the dimensions 1x3x5.  Good for closets, narrow hallways and what have you.  I find these to be particularly useful as it's difficult to make a good looking door in a 1x3xn space.

This never happened to me before, so what do I do?  I was just going to let the battery run out to see if that worked, but if there's an easier way I'd love to hear it.

Suggestions & Requests / Recolorable Glass on Default Windows
« on: November 13, 2009, 05:24:50 PM »
As I was building before, I wanted to use the default windows for their frames, but I wanted to use a different color as the glass.  Thus this idea was born.

Basically, you would be able to set the color on the default windows to anything in your colorset by using the printgun or something.  This would be particularly useful for making walls with thin framed sections, making windows with colored glass that have the thin frame of the default window, or even for making "paintings".
Also:  Larger sizes of the default window would be a great feature.

Discuss.
