General Discussion / Oh God I'm Old
« on: June 07, 2013, 01:41:28 AM »
Coming back after some sort of ambiguous hiatus a year ago, I had someone join my server and a short conversation along these lines ensued:

Quote
"You're pretty good at building."
"Thanks."
"You type pretty well, too."
"I guess so."
"How old are you?"
"17."
"Woah, a little old for Blockland, don't you think?"
"..."

That pretty much killed my urge to play Blockland on the spot. For some reason. Just like legos, Blockland seems to be one of those age-ambiguous games that attracts primarily younger kids, yet can still be insanely fun to play for all ages, as long as you ignore the fact that you kind of look like a senile old person playing in a ball pit full of toddlers.

Anyways, how old are you, and more importantly, what do you think is the primary age range of the Blockland community? And, do you give a stuff?

Judging from some of the "oh now you've done it im telling the admin on you" arguments I've broken up on some of my servers, it definitely seems like the majority is... lower than middle-school range. At most.

Help / Changing Usernames
« on: June 07, 2013, 01:31:49 AM »
If I want to change my forum Username, what do I do? I remember seeing the answer to this some number of years ago, but still somehow remaining totally clueless on what to do. Something about contacting Badspot, I think, but this seems somehow... annoying and third grader-ish. But not nearly as annoying and third grader-ish as keeping a username of a stupid anime character that you decided on when you actually WERE in the third grade.

I'd rather just make a new account, but it seems that I'd need to register my key with that name, and since it's already used for this account, that's not gonna work. But if there's some way to un-register the key from this account and move it to another account, then I guess that'd work just as well.

Help / How to Diagnose a Crash from Add Ons?
« on: June 02, 2012, 10:35:11 AM »
I've noticed that certain add ons seem to make my game crash after a few minutes while playing. It's literally nothing more than I play for a couple minutes, and without doing anything in particular, the game freezes without any sort of warning message, and I have to force quit.

Unfortunately, I have a lot of brick add ons, and I'm not sure how to figure out which one is causing it, other than process of elimination through disabling and test playing for a couple minutes, and that would take a *lot* of time. Is there any way I could see which one might be causing the game to crash?

Help / Mac Installation Not Working
« on: April 11, 2012, 06:51:32 PM »
I've bought Blockland already and was looking to update to version 20 after not playing for quite some time. However, I have a mac, and I found that both the .dmg link and the .zip link weren't working. Rather, they both crash for different reasons.

The .zip lets me open the Launcher but after some time of loading whatever, it gives me the message "Failed to perform bzip2 decompression", specifically once it reaches 269. Even more irritating, it freezes up and I have to force quit in order to continue.

The .dmg is even more useless in that clicking it simply gives me an error message stating that it couldn't be opened because of "corrupted image data".

So it seems like I'm running into glitches before I've even installed the game, and whilst using the links I got off the downloads portion of the website at that. I'm completely unsure of how to fix this. Is anyone else having the same problem/does anyone know what I should do?

General Discussion / Blockland and Portal 2.
« on: January 01, 2011, 01:29:24 AM »
So, for those of you that may not know, the game "Portal 2" will become out in about a month. And also, for those of you who may, for some reason, not know, Portal is one game that the Blockland community has adopted and fawned over so much so that there's practically an add on for every single feature the game has.

-Portal Gun/Gravity Gun
-Weighted Cubes
-Anti-Portal Bricks
-Prints
-Music (Both from the background, and GLaDOS quotes.)
-Turret Sounds
-Aperture Science 15000 Megawatt Super Colliding Super Button

And, of course, a helluva lot of Blockland remakes of Portal chambers and areas.

So while I don't mean to use the Blockland Forums to discuss Portal, I can't help but be curious as to how the release of Portal 2 will affect Blockland. When it's released, will Blockland users once again go through a frenzy of trying to make an add on for every new feature? Now, of course, some features are probably absolutely impossible to port to Blockland (Or are they?) but still, I don't see it as something that would just pass Blockland by without a certain amount of effort towards making some of the features available in Blockland.

So, what do you think will happen when Portal 2 is released? Any features you want to see in Blockland in particular? Are you a fan of Portal, or more specifically, Portal in Blockland?

EDIT : NVM, it's coming out later than a month. Sorry about that.

Help / What are Datablocks?
« on: December 24, 2010, 11:07:52 AM »
I use add ons, but I really don't know anything about datablocks. What are they, and how do you see how many datablocks an add on uses? Do music files use datablocks? Do all add ons use a certain amount of datablocks?

Help / Black and White Colorset
« on: November 15, 2010, 01:54:32 PM »
I'm trying to re-find a color set that I had downloaded a few versions back, it was basically just an all black and white colorset. It had 4 columns, one solid, and then 3 shades of transparency. It had like, 16 shades of gray or something, which could make for some great black-to-white gradients. Does anyone know about the color set that I'm talking about?

Help / What's new this time?
« on: September 30, 2010, 04:49:49 PM »
V17 just came out, and I'm curious to know what's new in it. Normally I would see a list of the changes somewhere, but I'm not finding that this time. (At least not right now.)

Does anyone know where I could find a list of the changes, or explain to me what has been changed?

General Discussion / Role Playing in Blockland
« on: September 16, 2010, 08:34:40 PM »
Some hate it, some don't.

I myself usually go with the anti-RP side, and find the need to put in my server welcome message "This is NOT AN RP.", just to avoid such things. Even so, my mall build/city build/amusement park build/etc, ALWAYS get someone who comes along and has to ask "Can I work here?"

Though I can't help but be somewhat attracted to it all. Changing my avatar, "realizing" things in builds with events and bots to make you feel like you're really there, they're all things that would technically be called Role Playing. I've realized it a lot with building my Alice in Blockland build, where the entire time I'm trying as hard as possible to make the player feel like they're Alice. So I find myself a bit hypocritical to act as though I'm somehow better than other people by tricking myself into believing that I'm not role playing.

At the very least, though, I can honestly say that I've never found the need to ask "Can I be the dog?" :/
stuff sounds like S&M or something... >_>

Do you ever role play? If so, how DO you role play? What role plays do you go to? What measures to you take to play said role? Where do you draw the line to where RPing becomes pure stupidity? If not, what do you think about the people who do role play?

General Discussion / Add Ons, or No Add Ons?
« on: August 27, 2010, 04:48:58 PM »
I've seen a certain contingency of people in Blockland who seem to NOT like Add Ons. The default is what they go by, and what they use. No new bricks, weapons, mods, tools, nothing. But I just wonder, is it really worth it?

One of the most obvious ones is Badspot. Whenever I've been to his server, he's had no add ons. This I can understand, because he made the game, so obviously he's satisfied with the options it has. But other people, why? Why not have add ons? The abilities they can open up, and the things they allow you to do, I really don't see any reason why people decide that for whatever reason, add ons are a sin or something. (My best guess is just the whole round bricks thing, that some people are against round bricks because they're playing BLOCKland. Therefor it can have no curved shaped, despite the fact that it's had some in the default version for quite some time.)

So. Do you use add ons, or do you not use add ons? Why do you think people decide to not use add ons?

Suggestions & Requests / Thin Bricks
« on: August 25, 2010, 01:46:58 PM »
I recently noticed something interesting from "A Random Brick Pack". (Well, one of the interesting things.) In it, he has a couple of print bricks. They're the normal 2x2 print and the 2x2 round print bricks. But they're on their side. Making something like a thin brick. (A bit less than half the width of a normal brick.) It takes up the normal space of a brick, but look thinner. This can allow for a lot of new things to be built, such as flags, signs, walls, all sorts of nice stuff. So I'm suggesting that someone make these kinds of bricks in various sizes, like a 1x1 brick, a few wall bricks, maybe a plate size or two. But I would really enjoy having more bricks like this, because I'm already using the ones I have nonstop.

Drama / "Considerate" Builders
« on: August 14, 2010, 04:50:34 PM »
"I'M FIRING NOW GET READY"
"Ready for what?"
*Server Lags Out*

Don't you just love the people who, when they do something stupid that lags out the server, they take the time and consideration to tell you that they're doing it, and to get ready to lag like hell? I sure know I do. /sarcasm

I've been in many situations such as this, where a person finds it necessary to build something that spawns an INSANE explosion. One where they have some large relay event, or an infinite looping projectile. That kind of thing. They know it's going to lag. They know it's going to make the server a laggy hell. But do they stop? Of course not. Instead, they take the kindness of notifying everyone that they're about to do it. AND THEN THEY DO IT. (Usually several times over, because "it was cool".)

I just don't understand this way of thinking. "I'm doing something insane, so everyone else needs to stop what they're doing and wait for them to be over. But it's okay, because I told them it would happen." Now of course, justice is usually served and they get banned from the server afterwards. (Probably to soon go off upset about their butthurtedness using "I told them" as an excuse to try and nullify that it was their own fault.)

Drama / Oh, well now we're totally friends.
« on: July 17, 2010, 07:18:07 PM »
I understand that this forum is meant for complaining about a person, but if I tried to state the people who do this particular thing, the list would go on and on....

So it seems like more and more often, people have been coming to my server asking if I remember them, and naturally get all disappointed when I reply with a "...?". Now I've said this multiple times in the forums. I'm here to build, not to make friends. I think I make this message fairly clear when I talk to people. (On my server, I try to act serious and to the point with things.) And yet, every day I have someone coming to me asking this question. Even if I do remember them, I try not to acknowledge it, because it soon goes downhill if I claim that I do remember them. (They suddenly assume that now we're BEST FRIENDS and that I'll do anything for them, like give them admin, let them break the rules, or ban the person who criticized their build.)

*Sigh* It unfortunately makes me come off as a huge starfish, often times. I don't act like this on most sites. But really, if you've only seen the person on another server once, don't scramble over to their server for friendship. -_-'

Suggestions & Requests / Throwable Objects
« on: July 10, 2010, 03:22:24 PM »
I'd like to have a couple of weapon-like add ons that would just be simple throw-able items. Like a ball, or a ring. Ones that wouldn't cause any damage, and would just be tossed forward weakly and easily. Basically like a smaller and weaker version of the dodge ball. I'm using these for carnival games.

General Discussion / Why are you here?
« on: July 06, 2010, 07:40:48 PM »
Why did you join Blockland? And why do you keep continuing to play? How DO you play? (Join servers, make servers, what do you usually do, etc.)

It seems obvious to me that people are in Blockland for a large multitude of reasons. I've been into building with legos for years, so Blockland appealed to me as a person. (Much cheaper and easier than legos, too. x_x) Whereas my friends joined because I was playing, and showed them that the avatars made funny noises when they died. And then I see people online who are newer to the Internet, and wanted to join because they were interested by the idea of building with other people, so they joined more for the social aspect of it all.

As of right now, I play to do exactly what I joined for. I want to build. I either join a server for building, or I make my own server to allow other people to build with me. But Role Playing has nothing to do with it, and DMs never entertain me for very long. So that's purely what I do. (Besides, with the kind of community that Blockland gets, I'm not exactly eager to talk to them all and be social. I'm not a very "COME AND TALK TO ME PLZ PLZ PLZ" kind of person on Blockland.)
