General Discussion / What makes people join your server?

(I don't mean this like a question and answer kind of thread, more of an opinion and discussion kind of thing.)

When you make a server, what do you find makes people join most often? What makes them not join? This is something I found out yesterday, that I find a little bit sad. >_>; I've made many, many servers. They're always a build. "O_o's Colorful Build, O_o's City Build, O_o's Future Build", but none of them got many people to join. Yesterday, I made a server. "O_o's Death Trap Build". And I was greeted with the joining sound hundreds of times. -_-'

I don't understand what it is with death, but it sure seems to be popular. Any time I find a server involving death, people seem to want to join. >_>;

But there seems to be a lot  of people desperate to have people join now that anyone can make a server. I see a lot of servers with "plz come free admin" in their names. I've also had a lot of people message me asking me to join their server, which I soon decline as well. Those two examples are what I mean by things that make people not join. At least, they make me not join.

So for English we all need to write a "Persuasive Essay". (An essay that persuades someone's opinion, for any of you who don't know.) We're allowed to write it on any topic. Now, I could do one of those boring and unimportant topics, like science or politics. But no, I am doing it on a much more important subject. I am going to persuade my English Class that the internet is serious loving business.

So, why is the internet serious business? I'm gonna have some fun writing this paper. I'll be sure that they don't see what I did there.

I just can't ever be satisfied with Blockland anymore. On my own server, I constantly get angry at the other people on the server for building badly or being completely incompetent to Blockland. (And grammar, and simple social skills, and the internet, and.... etc.)

When I go to other people's servers, I get irritated because they either don't have good add ons, the admins suck, the other people on the server are annoying idiots, or other minor things on the server.

I find it a bit depressing, really. I used to be satisfied with just about any server, but the people on the server would suffer from my noobishness. I pretty much only get on Blockland when I suddenly think of an idea and want to build it, and then I get off. I've definitely gotten my $20 out of it, though.

Are you picky about Blockland? Has your opinion of the community and overall experience of playing Blockland, changed at all since you've started playing?

I get countless people coming to my server who want to do some form of Role Play, and it bugs the hell out of me. There's always someone who has to start asking "Can I live with you?" or "Can I work for you?", or the king of all weird questions, "Can I be your pet?" -_- They also seem to enjoy making DM RPGs, where they start a whole system of fake teams, and a crappy zombie apocalypse plot to go along with it. Apparently this is fun for some people.

I just don't understand this fad. This is Blockland, the game where you build stuff. Not Blockland, that bad imitation of the Sims. I even get people like that when I boldy write "NO RP!" in my server name. ._.'

What's your opinion on the whole Role Playing, first person shooting, fad of doing things other than building on Blockland?

I have an application that uses a large amount of interesting sound effects, all in .aif form. I'm wondering, how would I get these sound effects over to Blockland, so I could use them in the game for events?

This really does bug the hell out of me.

I'm building something with events. I finish the events. It has a button on it. Someone walks over, and asks what it is, I tell them. They click it once.. and watch the events take place. A short pause occurs, and suddenly I see their tiny plastic arms go into a frenzy of wiggling as they smash their mouse button with all their might. D:<

I just don't see why anyone needs to do this. You saw the event once, so why do you need to see it 200 times over in 10 seconds??? Has anyone else ever done this to you? (Stupid question, I know.) What's some other kind of... Blocko Psychology, that you just don't understand?

General Discussion / I'm never going to call someone a Badmin again...

With my newfound ability to make servers, I've been making my city build server almost everyday. It's exciting, it's fun, I'm enjoying building with other people, but NEVER AGAIN will I call someone a Badmin. I really had no idea just how hard it is to be a "good" host. >_>; Constantly, people join my servers and want to build things COMPLETELY unrelated to the server, build spam, and ignore all the carefully laid out instructions I've given them on how to use the server. While I do get a good amount of people perfectly willing to read the instructions and build as they're told, the ones who don't follow the rules stand out in my mind so much more... ._.'

-What is a "good" host to you?
-Do you enjoy being the host of a server?
-If you're one of the people who has just started making servers thanks to V14, what do you think of the power you have?

Finally finished with my first major build, and it's called The World of Monochrome!

It's a simple concept, it's just all black and white and I tried to come up with interesting looking builds with it. I've never had someone else play it, and I'm not sure if it's completely glitch free, so it's still in Beta.

It requires a good amount of add ons...(Linked to the ones I can find.)

It works best on the Construct map, but if anyone still has Construct Vector, it'll work even better! When you load it, just go to the checkered baseplate that reads "The World of Monochrome", and press the buttons there to get started. Please, if you could, download it and try it out, just to see if there's any problems with it or anything. Hope those of you who download it like it!

I don't think it's really confusing or hard to figure out what to do, but I'll provide a short walkthrough for those who really are that confused by it...

Part 1. Press the button underneath you, you'll fall to the bottom of a shaft. Go through one of the four doors around you, and then find the one black door to exit the checkered room. Walk down the path and go to the next part.
Part 2. (I forgot to put the glass back, sorry. You can actually just go right to the next part if you're lazy.) Go to either one of the two doors on either side of the path. Go into the small chamber, press a button, which will take you to another small chamber inside of the larger ones. Exit through the door, and press the switch, then exit the chamber. Do this to both chambers, and then go back to the path. Press the button, and you'll be taken to Part 3.
Part 3. Navigate through the maze, at the end you'll find yourself in a room with several print bricks that say "Up" on them. Step onto the button on the ground, and you'll be fired up to the next part.
Part 4. Walk down the twisted path, and fall into the water below. You'll be taken to the end of the checkered room, and will find yourself in a gray chamber.
Part 5. Walk along the path and find the rainbow tile. Click it. You're finished!

Story : The black and white-ness symbolizes your mix between life and death. In Part 1, you are just waking up in the world of monochrome, unsure of where you are and why you're there. You fall deeper into a coma, getting nearer to death. In Part 2, you get a close look at both life and death, and return to your purgatory, to proceed farther. In Part 3, the maze symbolizes you wandering around blindly, not knowing where you're going or what's to come. When you finally find your way, you get fired into reality, and realize what's coming. You get to Part 4, and fall in the water, which makes you remember that you drowned. You know that you have to get out, but it's too late, you're in part 5, complete Purgatory, just waiting for death. Then, in one last glimmer of hope, you find your way out and back into life, which is symbolized by the bright colors.

It's a poorly put together story that I just threw together to make the build seem like it has some kind of meaning. The sanity thing is left over from the old story I had put togther, and didn't feel like taking out. It's more of a visual thing. xD


EDIT - And again, this is beta. In a while, I might work on it to make it a bit more impressive, and make a more decent thread in the mean time. 'Till then, this is what you're stuck with. Sorry! ._.'

Help / Servers randomly freeze up.

For some reason, as of late, certain servers I go to will just freeze up. The lag note appears, and I can still hear everyone else and read their chat, but the graphics freeze up and I can't chat or do anything from my end.

My guess is that it's some sort of add on I haven't downloaded. Does anyone know what might be going on?

We have normal spikes that point upwards, and I love 'em. But what about spikes that point down, or to the side? I could really use them, for traps and such. :>

Help / Where do I find these add ons?

I'm looking for the links to some add ons that I can't seem to find. Does anyone have a link for:

Candle Emitter and Light
Negative Light/Black Light
Props (The original one with computers and TV's and things, I heard I needed to go to some special other forum to find it. Other props don't seem to work without it.)

I just can't seem to find these with any source engine or with RTB, and I certainly don't want to go through all the pages of add ons to find them. (Though I get the feeling I'll have to...) Any of these would be a big help! o_o'

So today while I was walking through school, I overheard a conversation from two people behind me. I just heard something along the lines of:

...and it's this game where you're this little block dude and you fly around and build legos and shoot people and it's totally awesome...

I couldn't help but wonder if they were talking about Blockland. He sounded like a complete moron, but in a way, that's a very accurate description of Blockland. o.o

Do you think they were talking about Blockland? Would you have corrected them in any way if they were? How would you briefly summarize Blockland to a person?

Have you ever been on a server, and some idiot did something of bannable offense, and the admin banned them in a really funny way? Say, with a really funny reason, or a conversation right before said ban.

I once was on a server with someone spamming nonstop, while the admin was afk. The admin came back and bitched at him, but the spammer simply said "What are YOU going to do about it, hmm?" (English translation) and the admin banned him with the reason: "This."

Okay, so maybe I've seen funnier, but I srsly lol'd. xD I was almost glad the spammer had spammed just so that ban happened.

There's a lot of times in this forum/game where I see some poor 7-10 year old being flamed by a lot of the smarter users. Not like a "OMG NOOB D:<" kind of flame, but a "Lol noob :P" kind of flame. >_>; They usually just say something stupid, someone tells them they're an idiot, and they badly defend themselves. I made a whole new account and changed my user name when that happened to me a year ago. >_<'''

Though the smart people's comebacks are hilarious, I can't help but feel bad for the kid who's probably just trying to defend himself. Still, iz the internet. Srs bzns, too srs for 7 year olds~

Somehow I get the feeling this thread will not spawn the most pleasant of replies. ._."
