Author Topic: Internet but no webpages?  (Read 602 times)

Alright, so yesterday I changed my router's security settings from WPA to WEP so my DS could connect to it for wifi access. I was on my laptop and the internet simultaneously. Everything worked fine for a few hours, but all of a sudden when I tried to Google something, (I'm using Google Chrome) it said "Resolving Host" at the bottom for awhile, then said it was unavailable. I tried numerous sites and none of them loaded. I tried Firefox, same thing. I even looked to see if IE would work, it didn't. The odd part was, I was still connected to Steam and could chat with people, and I believe Skype was running as well. Windows Diagnostics Tool told me something was wrong with my DNS because it wasn't able to get the server for a "well-known website" (microsoft.com). I looked through the Windows Help stuff for some answers, did some stuff with my "DNS cache", and came up with nothing. I reset the router's security settings and nothing happened. I turned off my computer for ~5 minutes and that didn't fix anything. It was like I was connected to the internet but unable to access webpages.

The problem has since fixed itself, but I'm still wondering...what happened? Does anyone have any ideas? It may be hard to answer certain questions since it's not happening anymore and I can't replicate anything, but I'd like some suggestions, and maybe some possible cures I can try if it ever happens again.

Edit: I didn't even think about resetting my router, but then again AT&T is extremely touchy about people doing anything to their routers, my mom tried to straighten ours when they were installing it but the lady went ballistic.

This happens to me sometimes when my internet reconnects.
I'm not sure on the cause or the solution.
