This is 1/4 of the ring, the smaller one being a part of the model I did separately.  The model is in the foreground too, making it seem larger.

That entire thing is hollow.  The vertical column will house an elevator, and an interior will be added later.

It looks like the sides are composed of 1x1x# bricks. Why didn't you use larger ones?

Some of it is.  It's composed of that to make it look more uniform, and to add for the easier addition of detail later.
