I have a 1.5mm and have seen up to 5mm.

I never use picks, basically because any good bassist either fingerpicks or plays slap/pluck. I used to use picks when I was starting out, but I figured that continuing to use them would just slow me down in the process of improving, so I dropped them.

I use them occasionally as it is, even for acoustic or electric guitar. I'll use a .53mm for acoustic guitar if I'm going to be doing a lot of chords, and because I like the sound, but I just fingerpick or fingerstrum for everything else.

I can play very well with fingers and I am beast at slap.  Picking is just another thing to  be fluent in

No man, I got a jump start kit with a decent bass and a 15w amp and some other stuff like a case, tuner, picks (lol who uses picks for a bass) and a simple strap for $250.

My local music store was running a special, but let me find it online for you.

I'm actually surprised by the amount of serious replies here. While on the topic of music, look at this thing. People say it sounds like stuff, like a short circuiting electronic, but to me it doesn't sound that bad, and it looks pretty innovative and easy to play.
