Whether you port forward or use UPnP, people will not be able to hack into your network. It's completely safe.

All you need to do is enable it. Most routers have it enabled by default, so you can test this by trying to host a server. If it doesn't work, UPnP is not enabled. To enable it, go to your router's setup page and look for anything about UPnP.

There is a rare occurrence where this would work. Your router is crap and has remote management on by default.
