Apache2 Webserver | index.html is Read Only Problem (Ubuntu)

I decided to put a use to my old computer and make it a webserver.  But whenever I try to edit index.html (in /var/www) it never lets me save.  I tried stopping apache2 service, but it still won't let me edit it.

And ideas?  suggestions?
