IPod's software installs fast but the file size is loving huge. Your Ipod is probably just downloading the software.
It's your internet, not the ipod.

If you are using dial-up, of course.

If you have an iPod Touch, yeah, it's going to take about half an hour. It's ~320MB (from what I remember).

Also, your internet must not be very good.
