Is it possible to change what kind of ram your pc takes? Like if I have DDR and want ddr2 without frying my pc...

I already googled it, and some idiot fried his pc by jamming a ddr2 in a DDR. But what I'm looking for is how to change the slots, like the part the ram goes in.
