Author Topic: Laptop horribly slow - Suggestions?  (Read 419 times)

I posted in off topic because this is more than just fixing BL.

So about a month or two ago, my laptop really started to slow down. Trying to overcome the problem, I installed Ubuntu, and as pretty and fast as it works nothing I am used to running will run on it such as Steam, my Pen Tablet, BL (it works but it's choppy, but I'm still glad to be running it anyway thanks to Wine), and various other applications.

To rid myself of a virus I got a few months back I had a freeware virus scanner (called Malwarebytes if my memory is correct), but after it fixed everything (and it did remove the virus that had appeared) it had found everything was still just slow - which I think it was before I even got that virus.

So I never fully removed Windows, as my laptop wouldn't let the disc with Ubuntu on it to run directly after a restart. I've since taken to clock the time it takes for several individual applications/screens/MISC, and this is what I've gotten:

Windows Vista:
  • Mouse: 40 Seconds
  • Login: 1 Minute
  • Desktop: 1 Minute 40 Seconds
  • Dock: 4 Minutes 45 Seconds
  • Steam(Auto): 6 Minutes
  • Firefox: 8 Minutes, and I still have to wait about another two before I can browse, and even then it stalls every now and then.

Basically I'm just curious if anybody has any ideas they can run by me before I do something stupid and break my screen in half. I never was very good with computers, so I really am at a standstill anyway. Reinstalling Windows came to mind, and honestly I'm fine with losing all my fies if necessary, but I want to make sure I do it right and I guess am just looking for the say-so if I really should go ahead with it/how I might do that.

I can post specs or anything else that might show something that will benefit stopping this issue. I'd also like to mention that every time I start Windows up it checks file system C regardless of if I let it do it's thing and just restart.

tld;dr: Windows Vista slowed down a lot and Ubuntu doesn't easily/can't run my usual applications and I want to go back to Windows but I'm dumb and don't know anything about how to fix it or even if I have a virus.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Wipe the computer, and start anew. C:

Yeah, your best bet in this situation is to just reinstall Windows. If it checks C: on startup every time though, it sounds like an issue with your hard drive.

I appreciate the input, but again I'm at a sort of a standstill.

Windows slowed down and I tried to shut down, however it wouldn't and I waited a while before giving up and hitting the power button. Attempting to get to the "Repair Computer" option at the Windows Vista Boot Menu (Or something like that), hitting enter just took me back to the screen asking me to pick an OS. I decided to run Ubuntu again for it's easier than my iPod. Just my luck, it told me I couldn't run it because of an error, but rebooting Windows and running chkdsk /r would.

I believe it's because of my own stupid self pulling that manual shut down, and I'm guessing that's what others would say to.

So now I go and attempt to run windows and it checks disk c, which I'm assuming isn't the same as chkdsk /r?

I'm an idiot, when Windows loads what should I do?

Who was that friend person who had the tutorial on making your computer run faster?
