Author Topic: GPU speed +260MHz.  (Read 532 times)

Since I wasn't able to overclock my processor, I thought that maybe overclocking my GPU would at least make games a bit faster.

It did.

I managed to overclock it from 500MHz to 760MHz, and am noticing a huge difference in game speed.
It even fixed a lag issue I was having with Blockland.

The temperature hasn't been affected nearly at all. It's only went up 3F from 124F to 127F, sometimes hitting 129F. Audiosurf (with premium graphics) seems to be the only thing able to kick it above 145F.

Screen spazzed out and then BSOD'd at 811MHz.
BSOD'd at 800MHz.
BSOD'd at 790MHz.
Screen flickered at 780MHz.
then went to 760MHz and nothing bad has happened.

Current Specs:
RAM: 2GB DDR PC3200
Video Card: nVidia 8400GS 512MB (+256MB shared) PCI 500MHz (overclocked to 760MHz)
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 "Northwood" 32-bit @ 2.0GHz
HDDs: 1x160GB Ultra-ATA 7200RPM and 1x40GB IDE 5400RPM
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit

also case temp is usually 120F, even before the overclock.

Really? This is probably a software overclock, and these have never helped me much. In fact, I actually noticed a decrease in JC2 benched framerates.

I had to overclock my GPU With a bios flash. :\

My GPU gets really hot though. I was peaking at 95°C. I suppose it's okay cause the GPU is rated for safe operation up to that temperature. But I did notice a boost in performance.

Holy shiiiit, GPUs are rated up to 95C? I freak the forget out if the thermometer I think is touching my GPU somewhere is above or around 45C. I totally need to overclock if I'm not even close to unsafe temps on the most strenuous of games. I don't think I've ever seen an ambient case temp above 95F.

what the christ
Are GPUs supposed to be that hot?

Nvidia card's have this new feature that lets you cook your breakfast and dinner on them, They also provide heating during the winter.

Well mine is a laptop GPU, so it's built to get hotter due to the limited cooling. Even with completely stock settings, I was still hitting 90 in demanding games. It works up to 95, but it's still not good for it for long periods, as with any GPU.
