They use a image hosting site such as Imageshack.

upload the pictures to an image hosting site, than get a link for the pic, like on smug mug you would find the picture, hit share, than go down to "get link". then choose which size and copy the link to the picture. Anyways than you would click on the 12th button on Add BBC tags: and paste the link inside.
