Author Topic: My school and the internet  (Read 1177 times)

Right so there's this new thing in my school (and apparently all schools in scotland) called Glow. It provides a forum and other games/links/school work (for snow days even though no-body uses it then and for homework and stuff) for students. It's quite nice and there's some fun things on it.

The forums I'm a bit scared of lol.

Anyone else have something like this/live in scotland and have the exact same thing?

Hey, that's a good idea.
But not a reality here.

How trained are your tech guys?

Scotland is capitalized.
And no lol.
We only have one computer guy, and he barely knows anything.

How trained are your tech guys?
Don't ask. Let's just say they actually down-graded their computers from XP to Windows 2000. EDIT: They are ok though I guess (above posts).

Also people at my school are actually ok on the forums. There's only the occasional emote spam + text talk. I think it's partly because it's a school site.

So who has the capability of putting a forum together?

So who has the capability of putting a forum together?
Some specialist guys. It's not MY school that made it.

I mean, I need to give them some credit. They are good with basic programs (word, excel etc. and the internet. They can do some great things (they understand how to operate the forum and what-not).

But.

On the other hand our main IT guy can't do anything in paint so yeah.

Plus for about two months they only made us type words. Two months. Just words. Nothing else. I almost went mad. Most (pretty much all) know what he teaches.

Who knows, maybe I'm wrong and this guy is a technerd and he's not telling me anything?

Scotland you say? :3

But yeah, have the same thing. Glow Scotland and Glow mail. Our school can no longer afford to print out homework, so we have to download it from there. If you don't have internet access you must bring in a note and the school make you do it at a break/lunch. :C

I could like, talk to you via it lol. What part of scotland you live in?

My school has a forum too. Not much activity is going on though...

We don't have tech guys, we have our 1 computer teacher, who knows next-to-nothing about computers.
You know that there's a problem when you're teaching the teacher more than she's teaching you.

I love how most computer techs/ teachers read a pamphlet and they seem to be instantly qualified to teach about computers.

In Canada one school system is trying to put ads in schools.
I think that's pretty stupid.

we have this thing called FirstClass which is an email system and has classwork folders, kind of sounds similar but not really.

also, on your forums, stay out of the drama section. bad things happen there. I'd laugh so hard if it had one.

Our IT and Tech guys aren't very computer savvy.

One of the tech guys was asked to come in and fix a SmartBoard Projector, which consisted of hitting it a bit and tugging wires.

But their most common job is to come around to the teachers who don't have any idea how to do anything, and require help turning the speakers up.

Oddly, the most qualified person in IT and Technology is actually hired as a Maths Teacher, despite not actually having any specific Mathematics qualifications.
But, he does do a lot of IT work for the Tech guys anyway. Updated the computers network system and generally made the system more efficient.

Unfortunately, my school would rather force all students to learn French and German before starting GCSEs, and afterwards, force them to learn atleast one of the two languages, than teach them IT.
I believe that they only have IT lessons in 1 single year, and never again, lest they decide to take IT as a GCSE subject.
This pretty much means that most people are terrible at using computers and know little more than opening the internet, going onto a flash game or on Facebook.
They can't use any Microsoft Works programs at all.

Home computers aren't 100% modernized yet so making school work revolve around a computer is an awful idea
