Like .avi or .flac or .mp3.
Can they?
And it's not because I'm interested in doing it. >:C

I'm sure to some extent they could, but it doesn't make sense how.

I think anything can carry a virus. I don't know. I just think it's a matter of using a program to inject code or something into the program and then by executing the program, it triggers the virus.
Just a theory.

I'm quite certain that certain viruses can spread themselves through almost any kind of file.

research can have viruses. It has the most viruses of anything, in fact, not including STD's.

Anything with code inside of it means a virus can exist inside.
