He doesn't do it himself.

I have an large electric piano.
Mine's not super big, but its got a bunch of different sounds, songs, and rhythms. Had it since I has a little kid, and I still use it, just more often than I did as a kid. It only bugs me that it doesn't have a force gauge or whatever thing so I can play the notes differently.

But I have played music on a very old piano at my church (the main part of Requiem for a Dream being the one where I hit the hardest) several times, and I've never broken a hammer.
