Author Topic: Suggestions on Server (Tower)  (Read 1060 times)

Hi. I make websites for side money and have a few questions about a Server. I saved enough money(with 1 site) to purchase a Dell Tower Server. It is in my price range, however, I have some questions. I didn't want to ask Dell because I figured they would just try to get the price up. Questions below.

1) Should I purchase it w/ no OS and load Ubuntu on it ? | Should I purchase it w/ Windows Server or Red Hat?

2) Is 2GB RAM enough?

3) Intel® Xeon® X3430, 2.4 GHz, 8M Cache, Turbo -- Is that enough?

4) Is Ubuntu Stable?

5) Is Ubuntu Fast / Capable?

6) What kind of BL Server should I host on it? (CityRP, TDM, Dogfight, Zombies, Etc)

With this server, since I have 1TB, I will be hosting a 24/7/356 Blockland Server for the heck of it. It would certainly help to have users help me optimize this server. This is what I plan on doing w/ this server.

1) Host a Web Server
2) Host Blockland Server

Thanks ahead of time. I really am looking forward to purchasing this and hosting a server on it for Blockland. I don't know what I'll make it. I know some of you think, "What if you lose your power?". I will have a generator for it so it will only be down for 5 minutes max, and I'll have Jeepbot on the Blockland Server. Jeepbot auto saves every 5 minutes even if I'm not on the server, she also moderates the server. Again, thanks ahead of time for some insight.

Bump. I need a suggestion.

Ubunut is faster than Windows in most cases because it uses much less recourses, and 2GB would certainly be good enough. Your processor is pretty decent for just a server. The only problem is that Ubuntu cannot run Windows programs such as Blockland. You can, however, run it with Wine.

Thanks! I was going to get 4GB RAM but Dell is expensive.

Average computers have about 6GB's of RAM, but for what you are going to do, I think 4 is enough. (Not sure)

More like 3 or 4, Cookie.. lol.

Um, no. Average desktop computers these days have 2GB of RAM, and more expensive ones (Usually gaming PC's) have 4 gigs.
I, for one, have 3. fkljf No more money for another 2 gig stick so I got  a 1 gig.

Well, now, gaming pcs have 8gigs and reg should have 4, my old laptop from 07 has 4gigs.

Well my gaming computer came with 8GB but I upgraded it to 12.
Beachbum/Monocle still has more than me though >:[

Yeah, for hardcore gamers, but really, it doesn't really matter very much beyond 4 gigs.
I just wish I had enough money for 8 gigs, lol.

I game, so on average everything I buy is 6GB of RAM :D
I love my logic that no body can understand..
