the aliens modify it, it becomes self-aware, and it tries to kill everything.
It doesn't really try to kill everything. The probe's purpose as determined by the aliens was to seek out all information and return it to the creator. The aliens took that literally and modified it. Everything it was killing was just in the way of getting to the creator.
