Author Topic: Can I simply get a keylogger just from an e-mail?  (Read 501 times)

So I open my e-mail and this guy claims I now have a key logger. I did not click any links or download anything attached to the e-mail. Is it even possible to do such a thing to have it within the e-mail itself? This guy is on my friend's old e-mail account.

No.
Just reading a text email can't possibly do anything to you.
Hell, that sounds like it was wrote by a butthurt 11 year old.

I believe there have been viruses in the past that work that way. I can't be sure. In this case the spelling is really poor so I'd doubt it. A bad prank.

Most people who send iffy emails don't admit its dodgy in the letter itself, as many email clients show a preview of the text.

shes a loving cheeting bitch

That was in the subject.

But I can't get anything from an e-mail as long as I don't download stuff or click links, right?

I'd imagine it works that way. To be honest I've never seen an email that gives you a virus just by opening it.

Just seems like a kid trying to prank you.

Well I did say "I am not clicking your loving links, forget off" maybe he just thought I said I clicked the link.

In this case, I wouldn't be concerned. Spam filter the sender and run a scan if you are worried.

Bumping for more opinions on the matter.

I don't think so, I can't imagine how you could possibly get a keylogger when you just open an email.

well, yahoomail does do a virus check on emails and then an other virus check when you try to open up an attachment...

Just a failed attempt to prank you.

in outlook it still may be possible as you are forced to loving open and download all emails regardless what you want. though its been updated many times over the years when that was a popular virus fail.
