now that you've narrowed it down I'd say go with the first one. better processor, bigger harddrive. missing 1 GB of ram isn't going to kill you if you're not using it for heavy gaming/something resource intensive.

however I'd definitely wait for another opinion. and of course personal bias plays into this, which one do you want more? don't just go with what someone tells you because they said so.
Yeah Im like 99.9% leaning towards the dell :P

Idk but I remember my first computer was a gateway, came in a big ass cardboard box with a cow design and I think I got a free Cow stuffed animal as well as a Blues Clues CD Case
my first computer was an IBM
my dad still has it, and for its age it works surprisingly well

also other things to consider are .. well, features

they both have built-in webcam. they both have the same sized screen. the bottom one has a 28 minute longer battery life (but I'm pretty sure they're both estimates)

I have no idea how the GPU's fare against each other. might want to see about that.

I never pay attention to battery lives, because I usually use laptops when they're plugged in anyway

Personally I think the Dell seems better, and I'm a pretty big Gateway fan.

The Dell has a marginally better processor, but worse RAM and has a really stuffty GPU. Wouldn't run Sims 3.
I'd definitely go for the Gateway.
I'm not bringing in Dell's reputation either, like you asked.

Blues Clues CD Case
