Chapter 1: Desert Mission
“Wake up, Izzy! We’ve got something to do!” I heard someone say.
I lazily got up and looked at the time: 8:45AM. I didn’t bother to complain, “What kind of mission?”
“I dunno, Jared wants us in the brief room ASAP,” Emily replied.
“Fine, let me get ready at least,” and I got up slowly to change from my PJ’s. I was oddly still tired, and felt like going back to sleep. I still don’t know where I got this Block Mesa T-shirt… It may be from this game I heard of.
“Alright, let’s go!” she said without hesitation.
“Hey, I still need my guns!” she ignored me and ran off. I sighed and put a pistol and knife, which is all I needed, into my bag and headed out the door.
“Right on time, for once,” Jared said when I walked into the briefing room. “This is a mission that I only think you two can handle, but I will send in backup if you need it, got it?”
“Got it,” Emily and I said in unison.
“Alright, your destination is the middle of the Sonoran Desert. I haven’t heard of this desert before, but it isn’t far. There have been sightings of a person wandering there, no signs of sickness however. We need to see whether this person is kind of like us or not, and if so, then we need her back here. We cannot risk anymore of us to the Sectors.”
“Did the radar or life scanner detect anything?” I asked in curiosity.
“No one bothered to scan him/her, the morons. Which is why I’m sending in you two. The others will most likely mess up the mission for both of you.”
“Especially Chris,” Emily said with a giggle.
“Exactly! He’ll probably blow the hell out of the helicopter before we are even halfway there. Now let’s go, I’ll drive the heli for you two.”
Downstairs we saw many of the other members of RPWS (Role Play WarriorS) chatting and arguing. Fudge and Chris where playing Halo on the flat screen TV over in the corner to my left, and on the couch behind them Se’an was reading some book, and Shanny was at the snack bar on the direct right. Games where piled on the glass table in front of Se’an, one of them was “Half-Life 2”. If you looked closely, you would see this girl with a Black Mesa shirt like mine. However, mine said Block Mesa. I wonder if my shirt has anything to do with that.
“I will own you, like a boss!” Fudge remarked.
“Yeah right, time to pull out the plasma grenades!” Chris said, and on the screen I saw the bottom half actually throw one and the top half exploded.
“Hey guys, we’ll be back later. Chris, don’t blow anything up okay?” Jared then pointed to him.
“Fine,” Chris dismissively continued the game, and I saw the top screen blow up again.
“See you guys later,” Se’an said not even looking up from his book. Then we were out the door. The trampoline was abandoned for now and looking to my right I saw the helicopter, all shiny clean and ready to go.
“Let’s go! Got everything?” Jared asked.
“Got my bow and arrows, and a pistol just in case,” Emily replied, double-checking.
“Got all I need too,” I said. Then we boarded the helicopter.
The Sonoran Desert was a barren wasteland. I didn’t expect our mission to be a success when I saw it. “Are you sure this is the location?”
“I’m sure, my map shows an un-registered life form around here, it is human,” Jared replied with the map in his hand.
The desert was flowing with sand dunes and to me had no trace of life, not even the usual desert animals were around here. It looked like a stationary sea forever carved into the land. The scorching sun was high in the sky lighting the sea with all its energy, giving it its hot desert properties.
“If you need backup, call me and I will send in the others. Hopefully Chris won’t blow anything up.”
“Alright,” jumping off the helicopter, onto the sand. The sand was nice and hot, and I felt like taking my shoes off. Luckily I was wearing a white shirt and hat.
“Are you ready?” Emily asked, interrupting my scanning of the area.
“Yeah, so where would we go to find this person?”
“I dunno, you tell me.”
“Why don’t we try from the very depths of-“
“Don’t even,” she interrupted me.
“I was going to say the ground,” I finished.
Suddenly a piercing sound startled us both and lasted for a few seconds. The sound was like a high-pitched wail of some sort. “What the-” before I could finish an explosion rattled barely 100 yards from us, and knocked me to the ground.
“What the hell is going on?” Emily finally asked.
“Don’t ask me, ask Mother Nature.”
“I am sure it wasn’t Mother Nature, the sound came from straight ahead.”
“I think the explosion was Chris following us…” I smirked a little. We walked over the dune in front of us and I scanned the area. I saw a small little dot barely a mile away, and it was moving. It was near the direction of the explosion. I didn’t even hesitate before walking in that direction.
“Are you crazy, that was where the explosion came from!” Emily warned me. She was kind of new to this. A month since she joined, and she was far better than me at archery.
“How are you sure that person wasn’t the one who’s being attacked? Or if it was just some idiots blowing crap up? We have to investigate you know?”
“Fine,” she gave in.
We walked for about an hour before we stopped to rest. “Here, I got something for you. It’s a sandwich!” I laughed while handing it to her.
“How is that funny? Oh my gosh it’s my favorite!” she exclaimed after looking at the contents.
“Really? I got my favorite in here too, let me see.” I searched and searched the bag, and found nothing else. “What? Where’d all my stuff go?”
Emily then searched her bag too, “My food’s gone too! Only medical stuff and weapons left.”
“Are you sure you didn’t eat it all?”
“Oh sure I did, I really do eat that much don’t I?” Emily replied with the obvious sarcasm.
“Great, now we have a time limit. We should keep moving,” and started to walk toward the dot, which wasn’t a dot anymore. I wonder, did I forgot to pack more food and just thought I did?
About ten minutes passed before we reached the dot, it took forever because of how exhausted we were in the hour before. I guess that’s what heat does to you. When we got to the top of a dune, we saw something. It was only a lone blue tent, actually. How could anyone miss this? “Hello, is anyone here?” I called out.
“W-w-who’s there?” I heard a stuttered voice of a girl about our age reply.
“We’re here to help. Can you come out?”
The girl stepped out of the tent and had almost all pink and purple on, with flowing brown hair. Instantly I thought holy crap. “How did you two find me?” she said without any hesitation.
“I don’t think that matters. Will you come with us?” Emily asked her calmly.
“I don’t know… I got lost while traveling with some guards; I don’t think they cared about me much. I haven’t seen them for a week.”
My mind jolted at the word “guards”, “You’re from the sectors?” I immediately asked.
“Well… Yes, why?”
Emily and I looked at each other in astonishment, and then I heard something in my head She’s from the sectors too? I jumped, as it wasn’t my thought. Did that just come from my mind? I replied to supposedly my own thought.
Emily jumped when I thought that, “What the…” and she shot me a look. Testing, testing, I then heard in my head.
“How are we-“
“Can we go now? I want to get out of this desert…” The girl interrupted.
“May I ask your name first?” I politely asked.
“Ella…”
“Oh, I’m Izzy.”
Later I heard an obnoxious ring in my pocket, and everyone jumped at once, Ella strangely jumped the highest. She went about 20 feet upward! She then landed on her feet without being hurt.
“How did you-”
“I am part cat. Don’t ask for now,” Ella interrupted before I could finish.
“Oh, well okay then,” and I picked up the transmitter from my pocket.
“I’m coming there now, did you get the person? If it was real.” Jared’s voice came from the transmitter.
“Yeah, you better hurry! We’re starving,” I replied, and right on queue my stomach growled.
“We’ve got a situation. Chris, Fudge, Se’an, and Shanny have gone missing!”
“What? Is there any trace?”
“No, but we’ve got to hurry.” Transmission ended appeared on the screen.
I sighed, “Time for another adventure, and with a recruit too.”
