Author Topic: Grammar challenge: James and John, the Buffalo buffalo and the question of life  (Read 659 times)

Alright little Grammar national socialists out there, including myself, I've got some mindbending sentences for you. Each of these sentences makes sense if you add punctuation.

James while John had had had had had had had had had had had a better effect on the teacher.

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

That that is is that that is not is not is that it it is.

Excuse me while I clean up the pieces of my brain.

Prepare to be amazed as I, Clone the magicalz make sense of these sentences using a very simple technique, quotations.

"James while John had had had had had had had had had had had a better effect on the teacher."

"Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo."

"That that is is that that is not is not is that it it is."

Makes sense now because it is being spoken.

It would ruin the challenge for other people.

Transparent to avoid ruining it.
>James, while John had had 'had', had had 'had had'; 'had had' had had a better effect on the teacher. Easy.

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo. Doesn't need punctuation.

That that is, is. That that is not, is not. Is that it? It is. Easy.

Almost what I got. I've been away from school for a while so I'm kind of blurry on rules and stuff.

Transparent to avoid ruining it.

You sir, win. But the buffalo one can have some more punctuation for clarity. I still accept your answer.
