More GIMP stuff (loving GRADIENTS)

I need to know how to make a gradient that will take the picture, and keep all of its colors, not make it all one color, and have it shift over to transparent at the other side. Like the guy pictured below.

forget YES. If you set it to Color Erase, It erases FG and skips transparents, and makes me happy. :D
