Author Topic: Running a computer with 128mb ram.  (Read 1459 times)

Worse comes to worse, use Safe Mode.  Expand your virtual memory too.

Actually, with that old of a computer, you don't need to buy RAM - go to a junkyard or a dumpster. A late Pentium III or an early SDRAM Pentium IV should have the correct type of memory.
Also, if you find a working Pentium III-based system with a processor clocked at 1.2 GHz or higher, use it instead of your P4. Intel jacked up the efficiency big time when they introduced their new architecture.

Go to a junkyard or something. Maybe you can find another 64MB RAM stick. :cookieMonster:

Downgrade to windows 98 or ME, or even 1.0

XP is horrible on 128 MB. I downgraded my eMachines T1440 to Windows 2000 and it runs alot faster, but its still slow.

1.0 is a bit too low for 128 MB or RAM. I did run the T1440 on Windows 95 and it worked fine at one point (until I uninstalled it). There is no need for a Windows 1.x, 2.x, 3.x, or 3.1x to be installed on a computer with 128 MB because it might never even use half of the memory.

EDIT:
God, I wish I had money to repair my computer. It wasn't great, but it could function, unlike this.
The lowest I can downgrade is to 2000, which I had driver problems and that's the oldest OS my wifi adapter supports.
If you have a LAN cable and a Modem/Router/Ethernet Hub at the cable's length; try connecting it to that. That's how I connect my oldest operating systems to the internet.

He could probably find lots of 128- and 256-meg sticks, and maybe even 512-meg sticks if he's lucky (these were actually made, but I'm not sure how common they are or if his system supports it at all).

Get Lubuntu. Sooooo Much lighter than Windows

I think the main problem is the ram.
Actually, everything about it is outdated.

When I first installed XP (as reccomended by KoopaScooper) it was fine, but after a day or two it slowed down to the point where it takes 5 seconds or more to load the start menu, a minute to open a folder, 3 minutes to open a page, and so on. I've scanned for virii (plural of virus, right?) and nothing came up. I've gone on no suspicious sites, I've used CCleaner, defragmented, and it's still slow. I was going to post this on my computer, but the computer freezes for 10 seconds or a script goes un-responsive or I get warnings about Virtual Memory or just something that really pisses me off because I can't do anything.
Well forget. To get rid of 'stuff' you put on a crapton of more 'stuff'. Of course it's going to run slowly. Reformat.

I feel like I should give you a donation or something hahaha.  :cookieMonster:
