How can I play DOS games on WinXP?

When I was younger, about Grade 3, we had a game on the class computers and it had two kids. I think they had blonde hair. It was a DOS game, and you went around and there were monsters like slimes and what not. You solved things like word puzzles and math equations and so on.
Anyone know what this is? - Math/Word Rescue

Now, does anyone know how I can play DOS games on XP Pro? Does anyone have any experience with DOSBOX?
