Author Topic: My friend needs help with his PC.  (Read 757 times)

(A older friend of mine has a computer that is basically what I have.)
He posted this on /g/, but didn't get any replies.

"Hey /g/.
I was looking around in my garage for some things, and I came across my old computer. It used to run Windows 98 Second Edition, which I used almost everyday to play my games on it when I was a kid. So, I brought the computer into my house and I booted it up. It still worked. So, /g/, what should I do with it? I already have a gaming computer, so this computer would be kind of a hobby or what not. It has a 1.60ghz processor and 126mb ram, as for the other specifications I am unsure of what it has yet. I'm running XP Pro right now on it just to try it out. It's somewhat slow, but it's just to play around with at this stage."

"I don't really have any experience with Linux.

I think I know what I'd be using this for.
-Music (Need Program)
-Videos (Need Program)
-Web Browsing (K-Meleon)
-Emulators (SNES, Gameboy, NES, Mame, etc)

Any other suggestions?"

"I should also mention, what programs should I use to keep it up and running? I have CCleaner and Defraggler. I also need a Mail Client and a Torrent Client."

Yes, it's not mine. I swear. I'm all good over here.

Lubuntu. Try it.
I'll ask him if he's tried it. He says he has used Linux, but not very much to have any notable experience with it.

EDiT: He tried Xubuntu and Ubuntu on here. It didn't do anything after the loading screens when he installed it. He says he'd like to stay on XP, and right now he's looking for programs.

Link now provided. Anyways, is there any way you could upgrade any specs? Like maybe a whole GB of RAM if it can support that. I'm not saying dig super deep, but even Windows 98 suggests you have 512MB of RAM.

His PC uses PC333 RAM. Is that easily accessable online or in stores?

I would imagine not, as that's rather old.

Lubuntu. Try it.
More like Puppy Linux
That thing will run on everything. Plus Simple too

Here, I'd read this, it seems to contain a bit of info about the RAM. It's not the same, but I think you could get lucky here.

Okay, he says that he'll probably just leave the specs as they are. He'd rather not mess it up. He's not a big fan of Linux either.

So, I think he basically wants to stay on XP. :u

Fancy, I might try that just for fun.

Oh. Alrighty. I'd just ask him what he want's to keep and trash the rest if it's running slow.
