Dwarf fortress is oo advanced
Dwarf fortress is actually pretty fun (more so than minecraft was when I first played that, but that could be me) once you learn how to play it. Despite its steep learning curve, it's actually not that complex once you get the hang of it.
Think of it as an in-depth RTS, where you do not win. You will either be beat to stuff and then raped in the grim afterlife by green-skinned menaces(or what lurks below), or your society will collapse unto itself via rioting, rebellion and/or your dictative actions.
Geek rhetoric aside, if you like RTSes and games like Minecraft, Terraria or Roguelikes, or anything like those, you'd love Dwarf Fortress.
Personally, I used
this guide. Even though it's about 3 years old, it still provides in-depth information on starting out and grasping the foreign controls of the game. Some stories, fanfics and guides can be found on Blockland's own Dwarf Fortress thread aswell... where ever it may have went.
As for the other game suggestions:
- Civilization III/IV (IV may or may not run on your 'lappy', hard to tell)
- Rise of Nations (not the legends one, that one's crappy)
- Roguelikes. Roguebasin has an extensive list of some.
- An SNES/N64 emulator, and play the games you loved as a child. Or any other legacy console emulator; the ones listed are what I grew up with.
- Toss out the petty gamer lifestyle and make your own game. Do it friend. Lua and Love2D are popular trends if you actually choose this.
